Lee S. Smith ’65 returned to campus to share his remarkable story with students. In 1964, Smith broke the color barrier as St. Mark's first Black graduate — several years before Dallas schools fully integrated. After attending Harvard and the University of Washington, Smith went on to lead a distinguished career, holding senior legal roles in higher education, state government, and federal service.
In 2023, the St. Mark's Alumni Association created the
Lee S. Smith ’65 Courage & Honor Award, which recognizes a graduate who has used his voice and actions to affect measurable change to elevate humanity.
