Chapel Talk: Lee S. Smith ’65

Lee S. Smith ’65 returned to campus to share his remarkable story with students. In 1964, Smith broke the color barrier as St. Mark's first Black graduate — several years before Dallas schools fully integrated. After attending Harvard and the University of Washington, Smith went on to lead a distinguished career, holding senior legal roles in higher education, state government, and federal service.

In 2023, the St. Mark's Alumni Association created the Lee S. Smith ’65 Courage & Honor Award, which recognizes a graduate who has used his voice and actions to affect measurable change to elevate humanity.
