Lions Hit the Field

As summer draws to a close, the Lions returned to Norma and Lamar Hunt Family Stadium on Monday, August 6, to begin training for the fall season. Under the watchful eye of Head Coach Bart Epperson, the varsity football team began one-a-day and two-a-day practices, installing offense, defense, and special teams and getting their bodies acclimated to the Texas heat and pads.

“I’m always looking for leaders on the team,” Coach Epperson said. “I tell the boys all the time that leadership doesn’t know age, leadership only knows production.”

These preseason practices establish a crucial foundation for the team’s growth over the next few months. St. Mark’s coaches focus on developing the skills each athlete needs to succeed on the gridiron, while each boy challenges the next to be better, not only as football players, but also as leaders. This shared experience strengthens the necessary bonds required to compete as one unit under the lights every Friday night.

“Coach Epperson always stresses the importance of being good leaders on and off the field,” said senior Blake Rogers ’19. “Growing as men is just as important to Coach as winning games.”

Looking to build on last season’s 5-3 record, the Lions kickoff the 2018 season on Friday, August 31, with a home opener against Casady. The Parents’ Association will also be hosting the annual all-school spirit night, Lion Pride Night
