Lion Sports Update 04/03/18

Baseball
Although last Tuesday’s home game against Hillcrest was rained out, the varsity baseball team traveled to Oklahoma City on Thursday to face Casady in their first counter game of the season. The Lions offense wasted no time, and it was opportunistic against the Casady right-hander. Patient at-bats by junior Jack Rocchio and senior Calvin Hosler followed by timely hits by junior Cole Arnett and seniors Zach Landry and Jimmy Rodriguez broke open the game, as St. Mark’s scored 11 unanswered runs. Senior Reece Rabin was dominant on the mound, allowing 1 hit through 5 innings of work. The Lions continue counter play this week with two home games against ESD on Tuesday and Fort Worth Country Day on Thursday.

Golf
The varsity golf team recently competed in a pair of matches. First, the Lions played Parish at Sherrill Park GC. Parish’s #2 had a birdie-eagle-birdie stretch that put the Marksmen on their heels early. However, senior Rett Daugbjerg posted a birdie and an eagle of his own to even the score, and stellar play from sophomore Romil Mathur (who beat his opponent handily, 5 & 4), along with a strong joint effort from senior Ben Clayman and junior James Rogers, propelled the team to a 3-1-1 victory. A few days later, St. Mark’s squared off with Trinity Christian Academy at the Trojans’ home course, Bent Tree CC. Their top 3 all posted scores (35, 37, 37) that were quite a bit better than their season averages would have predicted. The Lions battled to the very end but came up short. Senior Hill Washburne shot a 39, as did the aforementioned Rett Daugbjerg and James Rogers (Rogers had a pair of birdies, the second of which came on a trying par 3). This week, St. Mark’s will play an 18-hole tri-match against Greenhill and ESD on Wednesday at Trinity Forest. The first group will tee off at 2:00 p.m.

Lacrosse
The varsity lacrosse team played one game last week against Greenhill on Thursday evening. The Lions led the game 7-1 at the half and wound up winning the game 15-4. The team had very balanced scoring in this game with contributions from Sam Schroeder (4 goals), Garrett Mize (3 goals), Connor Cheetham (2 goals, 1 assist), Charlie Rose (1 goal), John Burton (1 goal), Willie Wood (1 goal, 1 assist), Josh Daniels (1 goal), Colin Campbell (1 goal, 1 assist), and Reeves White (1 goal). The defense forced 11 turnovers in the game and John Burton was strong on faceoffs. This week, the Lions have 2 home games against Frisco (Tuesday at 7:30 pm) and ESD (Friday at 7:30 p.m.).

Tennis
The varsity tennis team traveled to Oklahoma to take on the Casady Cyclones in their first SPC counter match of the season. While the Lions won the match 5-0, the outcome was anything but easy. Three of the lines went to a deciding 3rd set, with Harris Wilson (line 1 singles) and the duo of Matthew Pollock and Adnan Khan (line 1 doubles) mounting come backs after dropping their 1st sets. The team has two counter matches this week against ESD (Tuesday) and Ft. Worth Country Day (Friday).

Track & Field
The varsity track & field team sent a select group of qualifiers to the prestigious TEXAS RELAYS this past weekend at the University of Texas – Austin. The athletes came away from the meet with improvement in almost all their events. Senior Clay Morris equaled his PR in the high jump with a mark of 6’ 6” to finish tied for 12th overall. Senior Fausto Reyher ran his second-best time of the year in the 110 hundles with a mark of 15.87. The 4 x 200 relay team of Kit Colson, Seun Omonije, Matthew Coleman, and Daniel Garcia ran a season best time of 1:31.40 (#3 ALL-TIME at St. Mark’s). The 4 x 400 relay team of Reyher, Arjun Singh, Coleman, and Garcia lowered their season best time to 3:29.98. The 4 x 100 had an off day and did not improve their season best time. This week the team travels to Prestonwood Academy on Friday for the LIONS RELAYS.
