Junior Wins Piano Competition

Last summer, Dylan Liu ’19 spent the first few weeks of his summer vacation hard at work practicing Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto, No.1 five hours a day. His hard work paid off when, on June 15, 2017, he won first place in the Texas Music Teachers Association 9th–10th Grade Piano Concerto Division at the TMTA’s State Convention.

"Since I was busy with school and finals all the way until late May, I barely had any time to practice my piece, so it sounded pretty rough,” Dylan said. “The contest happened just three weeks after school ended, so I knew that I had to practice almost nonstop in the first few weeks of summer. Even though it took a lot of effort, it paid off in the end."

Dylan has been playing piano since the age of four and is currently studying with Dr. Alex McDonald, who visited St. Mark’s last year as the Willard E. Walker, Jr. ’66 Visiting Scholar. Since entering Upper School, Dylan has been studying Piano and Chamber music with Mrs. Hendricks. Through St. Mark’s piano program, he has played in senior community homes, participated in School recitals, and performed at the ISAS Fine Arts Festival.
