Investing with a Purpose

On October 18, 2016, Alex Duran, a Dallas-area finance professional representing “Portfolios with Purpose” (PwP), introduced St. Mark’s economics students to the cyberspace universe of fantasy stock market investing. Students in AP Economics can now create stock portfolios with up to five major corporations and trade these shares in a market simulation that is designed to both teach the fundamentals of Wall Street investing and to raise money for charity.

PwP was created by Wall Street investors who sought to combine the entertainment and competitive appeal of fantasy football-style simulations with social responsibility and charitable giving. Typically, PwP competitors provide charity funds through a combination of registration fees and any profits earned from their stock picks. St. Mark’s students were able to participate thanks to an initial outlay from the Headmaster’s office along with seed money generously donated by St. Mark’s alum Beau Harbour ’01.

As PwP is a competitive enterprise, each St. Mark’s economics student will endeavor to pick the best performing set of stocks so that he might win the title of the most savvy high school investor. But there’s also a team element to the challenge as St. Mark’s competes with other high schools in the country. The winners will be announced in January and all profits from the investments will go to approved charities of the students’ choosing.

St. Mark’s PwP team is sponsored by History Department Chair David Fisher.
