Crew Hull Dedicated to Teacher

On Friday, January 22, the St. Mark’s varsity crew gathered to christen its newest hull, the Bruce C. Westrate, named in honor of the history teacher and Nancy and Jeffrey Marcus Master Teaching Chair. The Westrate is the first scull purchased with funds from the Quarls Family Sustaining Crew Fund, which continues to support St. Mark’s rowing program. Former crew member Harrison Quarls ’13 joined Dr. Westrate in christening the hull.

Ever the history teacher, Dr. Westrate reflected on his own classroom lessons exploring the long tradition of naming historic British naval vessels and the privilege that comes with it.

“You have honored me far beyond any expectation,” Dr. Westrate said, before joking, “I have every confidence that, given the training, the strength, the doggedness, and the discipline of its eventual crew, the Bruce C. Westrate shall, from the very beginning, prove much, much swifter than its ponderous namesake.”

With help from his wife Sally, Dr. Westrate poured a ceremonial pitcher of sparkling “champagne” over the scull’s bow.
