Marksmen Inducted into Cum Laude Society

On Wednesday, April 22, 2015, St. Mark’s inducted nine members of the Class of 2015 and nine members of the Class of 2016 into the Cum Laude Society. The students were inducted based on academic achievement and selected by a committee of student and faculty Cum Laude members. As per the Society’s constitution, up to one-fifth of the senior class and one-tenth of the junior class can be inducted.

Congratulations to seniors Kunal Dixit, Richard Garza, Luke Hudspeth, Rishi Kshatriya, Aakash Pattabi, Eric Rawot, William Su, Benjamin Wilner, and James Zhang.

Congratulations to juniors Jackson Cole, Alden James, Eric Li, Akshay Malhotra, Timothy O’Meara, Timothy Skapek, Eugene Song, Albert Thieu, and Kevin Wu.

After the new members were inducted, Ryan Cotton ’97 addressed the students, faculty, and parents. Ryan shared his personal journey through college and his early career, navigating between personal ambitions and external expectations.

“Never forget that you are enough. It is hard to stand up to the pressures that keep us down. It can be tempting to measure yourself by someone else’s yard stick, to keep racing for the next finish line, never realizing that there is no finish line. There’s just where you are and what you’re doing right now, which is why it’s something you need to care a lot about.”

After earning degrees from Princeton and Stanford, Ryan worked in baseball operations at the Boston Red Sox and as a consultant at Bain & Company. In 2003, Ryan joined Bain Capital, where he is currently a Managing Director leading their North American consumer, travel, leisure and hospitality, and real estate efforts. Since receiving its Cum Laude Society charter in 1959, the St. Mark’s School of Texas chapter has inducted more than 550 men, a legacy commemorated in the Cum Laude stained glass window in the narthex of the St. Mark’s Chapel.
