Newspaper earns highest honor

The ReMarker newspaper won its 15th Pacemaker award in 19 years in Boston on Nov. 5, 2023. The prestigious Pacemaker is the highest recognition given by the National Scholastic Press Association and is presented at the organization's annual conference and award ceremony.
 
The 2022-2023 ReMarker was led by editor-in-chief Shreyan Daulat ’23 and was advised by Jenny Dial Creech, who joined the journalism program in August 2022.
 
In addition, the 2023 Scientific Marksman was awarded a Pacemaker in the specialty magazine category. The 2023 issue of the annual student research journal was edited by Michael Gao ’23 and Aaron Liu ’23 and advised by Dr. Dan Lipin and Fletch Carron. 

Publications were judged by professional journalists and scholastic media experts. Areas of evaluation included coverage and content, writing, photography and design.

Additionally, students working on The ReMarker were recognized with individual national awards:

  • Artist of the Year (honorable mention): Morgan Chow ’23, a series of illustrations throughout the 2023 school year in both Focus and The ReMarker
  • Editorial of the year (honorable mention): Shreyan Daulat ’23, “LEED-ing to ensure a better tomorrow” ReMarker, Sept. 2022
  • Feature writing (honorable mention): Dawson Yao and Linyang Lee, “A Toast to Hollywood” ReMarker, April 2023
  • Newspaper Design (honorable mention): Morgan Chow ’23, ReMarker cover Feb. 2023, Morgan Chow ’23, ReMarker cover April 2023
 
St. Mark’s journalists attending the convention included seniors Ben Adams, Aaron Augustine, Zach Bashour, Noah Cathey, Zack Goforth, Nolan Marcus, John Ma, Grayson Redmond and Dawson Yao and junior Linyang Lee. In addition to attending the convention, the boys toured Fenway Park, visited the U.S.S. Constitution and walked the Freedom Trail. 
 
Creech taught sessions on investigative reporting and Interviewing at the convention and was joined by Adams and Marcus to give a session on sports writing. Goforth spoke on a panel with other student editors from all over the world. 
 
Creech went on to attend the Columbia Scholastic Press Conference's annual fall meeting at Columbia University, where she spoke on several topics. Creech is currently the president of the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.
