Senior reflects on his campus sculpture

Every year, a new student is elected to create a beautiful statue to decorate campus. This year, Winston Lee ‘23 submitted the winning design for the new Senior Sculpture Project installation. Situated between the Chapel and Fine Arts wing, Lee's sculpture is a three-foot cube with mirrored plexiglass surfaces that rests on a corner atop a three-foot hill.

“Some of the inspiration behind it is boxes, which have been a theme throughout my artistic portfolio,” Lee said. “The piece that I made my sophomore year utilized mailboxes, and the piece that I made my junior year consists of different plant boxes. So, in this process, I wanted to continue the theme I had built so far. This sculpture is a kind of anti-box because the focal point is everything outside of the box. I took the box idea and literally flipped it inside out.”

Wood and metal instructor Rachel Muldez highlighted the technical mastery required to achieve a seemingly simple idea.

"The inner hardwood frame affixed to the steel base gives this cloud viewer a strong structure," Muldez said. "Winston did an excellent job in both design and execution. The craftsmanship matches the work well. Viewers can enjoy seeing themselves closer to the sky and their dreams than ever.

Another source of inspiration was Lee’s 12 years at St. Mark’s.

“What makes the cube so special is that it morphs the landscape to its vantage point,” Lee said. “In a way, it represents a boy's journey through St. Mark's, and how we are morphed by the landscapes and environments around us.”

Lee also wanted this to be an experience for the classes to come.

“When a Marksman looks into the mirror, they see the future and the people who will come to shape society,” Lee said. “If you look at it from the Chapel, the amphitheater, the orchestra room, or even just from across the Quad, it is always a different perspective and angle.”
