Literary Magazine Wins National Award

The 2018–2019 issue of The Marque literary magazine received the prestigious Pacemaker Award, the preeminent honor given by the National Scholastic Press Association. The award was presented during a live virtual ceremony on April 17, 2020, after the Spring National High School Journalism Convention was cancelled. The Marque is one of only eight high school literary magazines nationwide to receive a 2020 Pacemaker. Matthew Coleman ’19 and CJ Crawford ’19 served as editors-in-chief for the 2018–2019 issue. Pacemaker entries are judged by teams of publishling professionals based on the following criteria: coverage and content, quality of writing and reporting, leadership, design, photography, and graphics.

“This award is a tribute to the hard work of the boys who review submissions and design the magazine,” said Lynne Schwartz, Trustee Master Teaching Chair, who serves as The Marque’s faculty advisor along with GayMarie Vaughan. “Receiving a Pacemaker is a signal honor for our School, and I am tremendously proud of both our editors and our staff for producing an outstanding issue.”

The staff of the 2018–2019 Marque included: Maxwell Chuang ’22, Matthew Coleman ’19 (editor-in-chief), CJ Crawford ’19 (editor-in-chief), Alex Geng ’22, Mujin Kwun ’19, Jamie Mahowald ’21, Sam Morgan ’21, Josh Mysore ’21, Toby Nwafor ’20, Tamal Pilla ’21, Metehan Punar ’21, Neal Reddy ’20 (director), Kasen Roberson ’20 (director), Siddartha Sinha ’21, Paul Sullivan ’20, Ned Tagtmeier ’21, Ekansh Tambe ’22, Sai Thirunagari ’21 (director), Jack Trahan ’20, and Sid Vittamreddy ’20.

While the students have been learning remotely since Spring Break due to the coronavirus, the 2019–2020 issue of The Marque is nearly complete. “Neal Reddy ’20 and Kasen Roberson ’20, our current editors-in-chief, have done an amazing job of finishing the design of the magazine remotely,” said Mrs. Schwartz. “They worked many hours to produce the quality product that is the 2020 Marque.”

The 2019–2020 issue of The Marque was released digitally at the end of April 2020.

In December 2019, the NSPA announced the Pacemaker Awards for high school newspapers. The 2018–2019 issue of The ReMarker received its seventh consecutive Pacemaker and the Focus magazine insert earned its second Pacemaker.
