Lion Sports Update 01/24

Wrestling
The varsity wrestling team wrestled at the Prep State Dual Tournament hosted by Bishop Lynch High School on January 18. This tournament had the best SPC and TAPPs wrestling teams in the State of Texas. St. Mark’s placed 6th out of 16 schools. The team highlight was beating Fort Worth All Saints 54-35, and Oklahoma Casady 48-18; however, our loss to Trinity Christian Academy in the 5th through 8th place pool solidified our 6th place standing.

This week, the team competes in the 4th Annual Bowie Invitational at Bowie High School in Arlington on Friday and Saturday, January 24-25. St. Mark’s will wrestle in the Private School State Tournament on February 1 at St. Thomas High School in Houston, Texas. The top three in each weight class qualify for the National Prep Tournament at Lehigh University.

Basketball
The varsity basketball team played in a pair of road games last week. On Tuesday, the Lions traveled to compete against Trinity Christian – Cedar Hill. The sophomore trio of Colin Smith, Tate Laczkowski, and Corvin Oprea combined for 22 points and 11 rebounds to forge a 5-point lead at halftime. The game remained close until midway through the 4th quarter, when the Lions strung together tough defensive stands to press the lead into double-digits and ultimately secure a 67-56 victory. Junior Harrison Ingram finished the game with a double-double (17 points and 12 rebounds). On Friday, the Lions traveled to Trinity Valley for their first conference game of the season. Corvin Oprea started the game on fire, notching 17 first-half points and helping the team to an incredible 42-point first-quarter burst. Harrison Ingram turned in a triple-double (14 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists). He had the big crowd highly entertained with four monstrous dunks that included a rim-rocking windmill and a beautiful alley-oop fromColin Smith, who had a PHENOMENAL game. Smith drained 9 three-pointers on his way to a career-high 42 points!! What a start for the Lions in SPC play!!! Each of the next 3 Friday nights are 7:30 p.m. home games for the Lions, so come support the navy and blue!!!

Soccer
The varsity soccer team had its only game last week postponed due to cold and rainy conditions and a saturated field. This week they play 3 SPC North Zone contests, one of which is the make-up from last week. They travel to face Trinity Valley on Tuesday, host Cistercian on Wednesday and go on the road to Oklahoma City on Saturday to play Casady.

Swimming
The varsity swimming team hosted Greenhill on Thursday, January 16. The Lions had a strong showing, and a majority of the team finished in the top three of their event. The Lions ultimately won 110-53. The Lions host Cistercian at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday.
