Pushing the Limits of Exploration

The Alumni Leadership Speaker Series welcomed international explorer and Distinguished Alumnus Victor Vescovo ’84 to share stories and lessons from a life spent pushing the limits of human exploration. Hosted in the Winn Science Center, the evening highlighted Vescovo’s historic achievements exploring the Earth, from the deepest ocean to the tallest mountain — and beyond.

Vescovo spoke about the mindset required for exploration, emphasizing preparation and resilience. “Exploration is not about recklessness,” he said. “It’s about disciplined risk. The boundaries of our world are far wider than you think — but they reward those who prepare.”

Throughout many of his explorations, Vescovo has donned a St. Mark’s crest on his arm. As he explained, “I wear the crest because St. Mark’s was the bedrock of my life. I acknowledge that this place was the most important educational institution that I ever attended. It set the course for how my mind was trained, how it was taught, and how to assimilate information and process it effectively.”

Vescovo joined St. Mark’s in seventh grade and quickly made lifelong connections with classmates, several of whom were in the audience. “It was like finding brothers I didn‘t know yet. And it was transformational to have that feeling of security of people who cared about me and were looking after me.”

Throughout his adventures, Vescovo has maintained a close connection with the School. He serves as a Trustee and often returns to speak with students in science and history classes. He delivered the Commencement address for the Class of 2019, where he shared lessons learned from two decades serving in the U.S. Navy, his work as a venture capitalist, and his ongoing explorations. He even enlisted the help of Marksmen to support a deep-sea dive, working closely with students in the Addy Family Makerspace to create a mechanism capable of scooping soil samples in the bone-crushing pressure of the Mariana Trench.

“One wonderful thing about young people and young engineers is they have no idea what’s impossible. They worked late nights and weekends, and I saw the excitement when they dropped it into White Rock Lake to test it. It failed, and then we said let’s try and figure out how to make it work. And it worked! We were able to scoop up sediment from the bottom of the ocean, not just once, but multiple times.”

Vescovo holds the world record for the deepest dive of a crewed vessel to Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench and is the 53rd person in history to complete the Explorers Grand Slam (climbing the Seven Summits and skiing to the North and South Poles). He later led the Five Deeps Expedition, the first manned mission to reach the deepest point in each of the five oceans. In 2025, the U.S. Navy named a forthcoming Explorer-class surveillance ship in his honor: the USNS Victor Vescovo will be among only a handful of ships named in honor of a living individual.

The Alumni Leadership Speaker Series brings distinguished Marksmen back to campus to share professional insights and life lessons with students and alumni. Past speakers have included leaders in business, science, athletics, and public service, reflecting the School’s mission to prepare young men for lives of leadership and service.
