Lion Sports Update (Oct. 30)

CROSS COUNTRY
The Cross Country team traveled to St. Andrew’s in Austin for the penultimate meet of the season. St. Andrew’s hosted 14 of the 17 SPC schools in a championship-style format, with all teams competing together without division splits. The Lions were led by Jackson Bailey’s ninth-place finish, followed by Nicholas Cho (23rd), Ward Beasley (27th), William Cho (30th), and Lawson Boutros (31st), earning a strong third-place team finish overall. The Lions now turn their focus to the SPC Championship on November 8 at Spring Creek Park in Tomball. Representing St. Mark’s will be Bailey, Cho, Beasley, Cho, Boutros, Payton Elder, Ailesh Sadruddin, Jack Bourne, Charles Shea, and Preston Bailey, with George Brown and Alex Marczewski serving as alternates.

FOOTBALL
Last week, the Varsity Football team hosted Episcopal High School for the annual Homecoming Game, played Thursday evening due to weather forecasts. The Lions’ defense shined in the first half, holding Episcopal to just seven points while generating multiple key stops. Offensively, St. Mark’s found rhythm in the second quarter, as David Dickson capped a 12-play drive with a one-yard touchdown run. David McAtee connected with Grant Kennington for a two-point conversion, giving the Lions an 8–7 lead at halftime. Despite a late rally featuring another Dickson touchdown and a two-point run from Braden Scott, the Lions fell 32–16 after a final-minute Episcopal score. Defensively, five Lions recorded double-digit tackles—Mac Saye (15), Zac Yarckin (13), Marshall Bagley (12), Tobias Pulido (12), and Ford Robinson (10)—with Robinson also adding four pass breakups and an interception. The Lions close their season this Friday at ESD.

VOLLEYBALL
The Varsity Volleyball team competed in two matches last week. On Tuesday, the Lions faced HSAA, using the opportunity to rest starters following a demanding weekend in Austin. With strong performances from several contributors, including Neil Rakheja, who stepped in seamlessly, the team secured a solid win. On Saturday, the Lions battled a surging Casady squad in a closely contested match, ultimately falling despite competitive play throughout. St. Mark’s now sits in a three-way tie for first place in the SPC, setting up a pivotal match against Greenhill this Thursday with major implications for tournament seeding.
