Winter SPC Tournament Wrapup

While the winter season finished with a disappointing cancellation of the SPC tournament due to inclement weather, St. Mark’s athletes equipped themselves exceptionally well across the board.

The Lion’s swimmers were poised to win an unprecedented tenth straight SPC Championship, with solid season wins against strong conference opponents Casady and Greenhill. Jeff Dickason ’04, Foster Hays ’04, David Strauss ’04, Walker Fults ’04, Sumpter Smartt ’05, Charlie Wilson ’05, Michael McBee ’06, Peter Yen ’06, Tarik Fayad ’06, David Newell ’07 and Matthew Perkins ’07 have all been honored as All-Conference selections by the SPC. Newell, Hays, Dickason, Smartt, and McBee all went on to compete in the Eastern Prep School Championships, held February 27-29 at LaSalle University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The wrestling team was also honored with numerous All-Conference selections. Vincent Tenorio ’07, Jason Scovell ’06, Zach Ramsey ’04, Dunc Fulton ’04, Travis Pena ’06, John Stewart ’04, Daniel Branch ’05, Sam Zakhour ’05, Julian Nacol ’05, Joseph Choi ’06, Elliott Wallace ’06, Garrett Collier ’04, Stephen Unterberg ’04, and Will Plunket ’07 all received this award. The wrestling team has since captured the Private School State Wrestling Championship, and traveled to the Prep National Tournament, held February 27-29 at Leheigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Named as Co-Champions of the SPC Division 1 Boy’s Basketball Tournament, the St. Mark’s basketball team capped off a very successful season. With an overall record of 28-6, and a North Zone record of 8-0, the Lions were a solid contender for this year’s crown. Season highlights also include wins against strong opponents 5A Richardson Berkner and TCA. In the SPC Tournament, the Lions had sound victories over Episcopal High School (78-45) in the first round, and Holland Hall (57-47) in the semi-final game. Seniors Kenton Thornton, Damon Wright, and Nick Cassavechia were named All-Conference on this outstanding team.

The season ended for the St. Mark’s soccer team after a bitterly cold 3-0 victory over St. Stephen’s in the opening round game of the SPC Tournament. This completed a 10-10-4 season that demonstrated heart and determination from our senior leadership, coupled with the enthusiasm and promise of a talented pool of younger players. Senior captains Marcello Ortega and Travis Morrison, along with seniors Michael Titzer and Josh Montross offered great leadership to a young team with outstanding potential for the future. Junior goalkeeper Brent Stewart and senior defender Marcello Ortega were named All-Conference players by the SPC.

All of our athletes deserve congratulations on an outstanding winter season. Each of these young men represented themselves in a manner consistent with the characteristic traits we use to describe what it means to be a Marksman.
