The 2009 Commencement ceremony on
May 22nd honored a talented group of Marksmen, many of whom received exemplary
recognition from across the country. In addition to numerous scholarships and
accolades, the National Merit Scholarship Program named a record 28 class
members as Finalists, two as Semifinalists, and 18 for Letters of Commendation.
The evening’s class awards included
the J.B.H. Henderson Citizenship Award, the School Flag Award, and the
Headmaster’s Cup, as well as special acknowledgment of Class President Mark
Kane, Co-Salutatorians Mark O’Meara and Conner Pate, and Valedictorian Nathan Long.
The J.B.H. Henderson Citizenship
Award is presented to the senior who has genuine concern for others and who is
dedicated to the ideals of honor and justice. This year’s recipient, Whit
Shaw, “epitomizes the qualities of gentleman, scholar, athlete, leader, and
friend,” Headmaster Arnie Holtberg said. “His sense of justice and personal
humility are evident in all he does and says.”
The School Flag, awarded to a
senior for his loyalty, dedication, and distinguished service to the School,
honored both Alex Brown and
Tyler Mow-Unland, as “the faculty found it impossible to decide
between the two nominees.” Alex was praised as “a young man of substance,
creativity, and intellect… [who] has pushed the boundaries of learning and
knowledge.” Leading by word and deed and, Tyler “has earned our respect because
he first respects all others,… [taking] very seriously the maxim that we want
our students to be strong in body, mind, and spirit.”
Finally, the Headmaster’s Cup is bestowed
upon the senior who best exemplifies the traits that St. Mark’s seeks to foster
in its students: the quest for excellence, intellectual curiosity and commitment,
service to the School and community, and concern for others. “This year’s
recipient, Brad Travis, is a scholar
whose intellectual range is great,” stated Holtberg. “He rises to every
challenge and exceeds the highest of expectations.”
Congratulations to our newest
alumni, the Class of 2009!
