All-American Wrestler

Ben Grisz ’08 followed a childhood dream of becoming an All-American wrestler and achieved it in Fargo, North Dakota, this summer. To his credit, he already stands as a dominant wrestler in Texas and won the high school division in the Oklahoma Open in November 2005. This past season, he also was a Prep Nationals All-American and The Dallas Morning News starter at 189-lbs. By winning the Cadet Freestyle State Championship at 189-lbs. in April 2006, Ben earned a spot on Team Texas and a chance to compete in “the largest and most prestigious high school wrestling tournament in the world.” Becoming a Fargo All-American “legitimizes a wrestler’s elite status and draws the attention of college coaches.”

In a bracket “with 48 of the best 15-16 year old 189-lb. wrestlers in the country,” Ben’s first day included 5 matches, the maximum number allowed. After winning the first three comfortably, he faced the eventual #2 finisher in his fourth match and prevailed (6-0, 3-7, 6-6). His last match, however, left him just short (2-4, 4-5) against the eventual #4 finisher. After crushing his first two competitors on the second day, “criteria were used to determine who wrestled for 1st, 3rd, and 5th. Under this criteria Ben had to wrestle for 5th even though he was clearly the equal of anyone in his bracket.” Dropping the first round 4-5, Ben regrouped and dominated the last two rounds 3-1 and 1-0, claiming 5th place with a record of 7-1.
