This summer, more than 40 St. Mark’s faculty, staff, and administrators expanded their expertise through professional development programs across the country and abroad, traveling to destinations including Japan, France, and Spain. From national conferences to hands-on workshops, teachers undertook training, learned and shared best practices, and acquired new skills that will directly impact the student experience on campus.
Professional development opportunities undertaken this summer included:
Spanish teacher Dr. Katherine Anson presented at the American Association of Teachers of Spanish & Portuguese Annual Conference, where she shared a case study on the benefits of combining language learning with physical exercise.
Art teacher Kate Wood attended a drawing and painting workshop at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Colorado, where she studied under acclaimed contemporary artist Becky Suss.
Lower School music teacher Garrett Kheshtinejad attended the World Music Drumming Workshop and SMU Summer Music Education Workshop.
Several teachers attended AP workshops and conferences, learning new pedagogical methods and exam preparation skills for their respective subjects.
Members of the security team undertook a tactical training course to hone their emergency response skills.
Janet Lin, Gene and Alice Oltrogge Master Teaching Chair, attended the International Summit on Mandarin Education in Taiwan. At this conference, she learned about a wide range of topics, including the integration of AI in Chinese language instruction, strengthening global collaboration among Chinese language educators, and sharing successful strategies for deepening Chinese language learning.
“Through this conference, I was introduced to cutting-edge tools and methods that can support and enrich student learning,” Lin said. “I came away with practical strategies and fresh perspectives that I’m excited to apply in my own teaching.”
Through endowed funds and annual giving, St. Mark’s awarded nearly $150,000 in professional development grants this summer. These opportunities allow teachers and staff to continuously grow as professionals. The experiences and knowledge they gain are ultimately brought back to the classrooms, studios, and playing fields, further enhancing the experience for all Marksmen.
