Lions Sports Update 08/30

Cross Country
The varsity and JV cross country teams enjoyed a successful outing at the Greenhill Relays to start off the season. The Varsity “A” Team, comprised of Seth Weprin ’19, Sam Shane ’18, Scott Smythe ’17 and Daniel Cope ’17 finished third overall in the 4A & Under race, losing only to UIL 3A powerhouses Sanger and Decatur. The team ran very well and finished with the fastest team time in School history: 31:00.8! The five other St. Mark’s teams that ran finished very high in their particular divisions. This Saturday, the team will travel to the Marcus I Invitational at North Lakes Park in Denton. This will be the first time the team will run a 5K course this season.

Football
The varsity football team hosted Greenhill in the first game of the season on Friday night. This is the first time in memory that the St. Mark’s and Greenhill game was not the last game of the season and the first time the game didn’t count toward the SPC standings as the Lions are now classified as SPC 4A and the Hornets are SPC 3A. The Hornets scored three early touchdowns to take a 20 point lead. The Lions answered with 2 touchdowns (Canyon Kyle ’18 pass to Ryan Warner ’19 and Canyon Kyle pass to Seun Omonije ’18) to close the lead to 14-20 at the half. Greenhill again started the half with several scores pushing the lead to 42-14. The Lions kept battling, scoring 14 points to end the game (again TD catches by Warner and Omonije). However, the Lions ran out of time on their comeback attempt, falling to the Hornets by a score of 27-42. The Lions will have this week off to regroup and will travel to play Casady (OKC) on September 9.

Volleyball
The volleyball team will play its first home match of the season this Thursday at 5:30 p.m. against Greenhill.
