As the 2025-2026 school year drew to a close, the faculty and staff came together for a final lunch hosted by the Parents’ Association. Eugene McDermott Headmaster David W. Dini took this opportunity to recognize several colleagues for their outstanding work and dedication to the School.
The Ackerman Character Education Award, established by the Edward and Wilhelmina Ackerman Family, honors a teacher who focuses on the total development of students, with a particular emphasis on character and morality. This year’s recipient is Harry Flaherty, head varsity football coach and history teacher.
The John H. Murrell Excellence in Teaching Award, created to recognize and reward outstanding classroom teaching and to incentivize mid-career teachers to remain in the profession, was presented to three recipients this year: second-grade teacher Susan Morris, film studies teacher Mark Scheibmeir, and Latin teacher Dr. Andre Stipanovic.
The Superior Staff Award, given to non-teaching staff members nominated by their colleagues for outstanding support of the School community, was presented to Duane Barnhart, Assistant Director of the Physical Plant, and Raeann Robertson, Development Assistant. Additionally, a Special Award was presented to Laura Gomez for her exceptional commitment and service to the School community.
The Ralph B. Rogers Alumni Award is given annually to a teacher or staff member who has made an important and pioneering contribution to the School’s mission and community. Nancy Marmion, J.J. Connolly Master Teaching Chair, was announced as this year’s recipient, along with finalists Makerspace Director Stewart Mayer and Humanities teacher Cindee McMahon.
Finally, Dini wished a fond farewell to departing faculty and staff, including several who are retiring – and who together represent more than 200 years of service to St. Mark’s: Jeanette Bovenzi, David Cox, Don Denman, Jan Forrester, Don Humphrey, Alicia Muratalla, Laura Pigg, and Sherry Yates.
