Lion Sports Update (Nov. 5)

FOOTBALL
Friday night, the Varsity Football team closed out its season with a 21–14 victory over ESD. In an exciting contest, the Lions controlled the early part of the game and took a 14–0 lead into halftime. After several injuries and a few stalled drives, the game tightened late, with ESD pulling even at 14–14 in the fourth quarter. A 50-yard punt by Henry McGill flipped field position, and moments later, the defense responded as Ford Robinson intercepted a pass following quarterback pressure from Benjamin Weinstein. The Lions’ offense capitalized quickly with a 47-yard completion from Blaize Schuhmacher to Archer Wilburn, followed by a 20-yard touchdown screen pass to Donnell Dickson. The defense then sealed the win with a four-down stop, highlighted by tackles from Robinson and Mac Saye. Offensively, St. Mark’s rushed for 157 yards—109 from Dickson, who stepped in to replace his brother David. Schuhmacher finished 13 of 20 for 171 yards and two touchdowns, connecting with Wilburn for 75 yards and Grant Kennington for a score. Defensively, Saye, Spencer Hopkin, and Marshall Bagley each recorded double-digit tackles, while Reid Smith tallied eight quarterback pressures and two pass breakups. Robinson added seven tackles, two breakups, and an interception. The Lions conclude the season at 5–5 and look forward to building on this strong finish next year.

VOLLEYBALL
The Varsity Volleyball team played one match last week, a critical conference contest against Greenhill. With a top-two finish in the regular season on the line, the Lions regrouped after a slow start in the first set to win the frame and ultimately sweep the match in straight sets. With Fort Worth Country Day winning their final match that same night, St. Mark’s concluded the regular season as the second seed heading into the SPC Tournament. The Lions travel to Houston this weekend, where Awty and Episcopal High School will host the tournament. St. Mark’s opens play in the quarterfinals against the winner of the Trinity Valley and Kinkaid match. Results will be posted on the SPC website.

CROSS COUNTRY
The Cross Country team was off last weekend as they prepared for the SPC Championship on Saturday, November 8, at Spring Creek Park in Tomball. The Lions will compete in the championship race at 9:30 a.m.
