Lion Sports Update (Dec. 2)

BASKETBALL
The Varsity Basketball team remained busy leading into Thanksgiving, picking up several strong results. On Nov. 18, the Lions traveled to Roosevelt High School and earned a 61–43 win in an energetic road environment. Juniors Asher Collins, Dawson Battie, and AJ Thomas combined for more than 40 points and 20 rebounds to lead the way.

On Nov. 21, St. Mark’s returned home to face Austin Prep. After falling behind by as many as 20 points in the first quarter, the Lions mounted an impressive comeback. Battie and Collins each recorded 20-point double-doubles, while senior Pranav Danda added seven points and four assists. In the closing seconds, with the Lions trailing by one, Battie calmly sank two free throws and then stole the ensuing inbounds pass to secure a dramatic one-point victory.

The team then competed in a two-day showcase at Nolan Catholic High School, playing back-to-back doubleheaders on the Monday and Tuesday before Thanksgiving. St. Mark’s swept all four opponents—The Village School (Houston), Concordia Lutheran (Tomball), Nolan Catholic, and Trinity Christian Academy (Addison). Freshman Trevez McMiller delivered a breakout performance, junior Anderson Lee reached double figures, and sophomore Wes Jackson made key plays on both ends of the court throughout the showcase.
At the annual Thanksgiving HoopFest, one of the nation’s premier high school basketball events, the Lions faced Burleson Centennial on Friday morning. Despite a strong defensive effort, St. Mark’s suffered its first loss of the season in a low-scoring contest and now stands at 7–1.

This week, the Lions travel to Jesuit College Prep for the Knights of Columbus Invitational. They will open the tournament against Amarillo Tascosa Dec. 3 at 5:30 p.m. in Jesuit’s main gym.

SOCCER
A depleted Varsity Soccer roster earned a resilient 1–0 road victory at TCA on Nov. 21. The match was rescheduled due to inclement weather, leaving half the roster unavailable. Senior captain Alex Dahlander stepped in at goalkeeper for the first time in his career, and several reserve players answered the call-up.
Junior forward Wyatt Gair scored the game’s lone goal just five minutes in, driving a low shot past the keeper from the top of the box off an assist from senior Max Bean. Gair nearly doubled the lead minutes later with a header off the crossbar. Defensively, Cristian Duarte and Ian Cho anchored the center of the back line, limiting chances on goal. The return of senior captain Kazim Hussain helped the Lions control the midfield throughout.

St. Mark’s travels to Nolan Catholic High School Dec. 2, before returning home to host Kinkaid (Houston) Dec. 4 at 8 p.m.

WRESTLING
Seven St. Mark’s wrestlers competed in a large Junior Varsity tournament at Rockwall-Heath High School on Nov. 20, featuring more than 300 entrants. Sophomore Parker Oskoui and freshman Kui Fine earned bronze medals.

The Varsity squad returns to action Dec. 3, traveling to Jesuit College Prep for a 5:30 p.m. dual. St. Mark’s will compete Dec. 5-6 at Rockwall High School’s Rumble at the Rock tournament.

SWIMMING
Varsity Swimming had no competitions during the week prior to the holiday break. The Lions continue training in preparation for their next home meet on Dec. 11, when they will host Cistercian, Oakridge, John Paul II, and Alcuin at the Levering Pool.
