Football The Lions (4–1) delivered a dominant performance Friday night at Hunt Family Stadium, overwhelming John Paul II, 58–7. From the opening whistle, the Lions controlled the game on the ground, piling up 215 rushing yards and six touchdowns. David Dickson powered the attack with 164 yards and three scores, while Donnell Dickson added two touchdowns of his own. Braden Scott capped the effort with a 12-yard scamper into the end zone. The success on the ground opened passing opportunities as quarterback Blaize Schumacher connected with David McAtee for a 28-yard touchdown, and receivers Matthew Wier, Archer Wilburn, and Charlie Aisner each hauled in key explosive plays. The defense was just as relentless, forcing three turnovers. Mac Saye and Blaine Henley each returned interceptions deep into Cardinal territory, while Cameron Steinbrueck forced a fumble recovered by J.T. Teinert. Reid Smith and Marshall Bagley recorded sacks, and Marshall Sudbury sealed the victory with a safety late in the fourth quarter. The Lions now turn their attention to divisional play, traveling to Houston this Friday to take on SPC rival Kinkaid.
Water Polo The Lions took their talents south this weekend for a three-game slate in San Antonio, emerging with a perfect record. After a slow start against Foster, the Lions found their rhythm and pulled away for a 14–11 victory behind Oliver Geheb’s four goals. Against state No. 1–ranked Boerne Champion, the Lions left no doubt. A fast-paced attack carried St. Mark’s to a commanding 22–14 win, highlighted by four-goal outings from Max Lee and Doan Nguyen. The trip closed with a statement, as the Lions dominated host Alamo Heights, 17–3. James McGinnis led the way with five goals. The Lions now look ahead to Senior Night against John Paul II on Wednesday, Oct. 1, where the program will honor nine seniors who have helped set the standard for St. Mark’s water polo.
Cross Country With the Jesuit Fall Classic canceled, the Lions hosted their first-ever 5K/3200m meet on the track Saturday morning, welcoming six schools to campus. While times will not count toward SPC qualification, the meet showcased the team’s impressive depth as every Marksman set a personal best. This weekend, the squad heads to Spring Creek Park in Tomball—site of this fall’s SPC Championship—for a crucial early preview of the November course.
Volleyball After a tough midweek loss to Trinity Valley, the Lions regrouped for two critical SPC matchups. St. Mark’s rallied from a set down to defeat Episcopal High School (3–1) before sweeping St. John’s in straight sets on Saturday. Now 4–0 in conference play, the Lions will face fellow unbeaten Fort Worth Country Day in a marquee matchup this week before hosting Greenhill on Friday in a non-counter.
