Teacher Grammar with Shakespeare

One of St. Mark's newest teachers shared his latest classroom techniques with the web as guest-author for the Folger Shakespeare Library's blog.

Geoff Stanbury shared how he teaches English to his seventh-grade humanities class using excerpts from Shakespeare's Othello and Titus Andronicus. While Mr. Stanbury admits that traditional grammar lessons can be a tough sell for middle school boys, pairing the lessons with dramatic Shakespearean interpretations allows the boys to act out what they're learning. As the boys take turns acting and directing, they begin to ask questions about why certain characters speak and act in certain ways, allowing Mr. Stanbury to slip in a few literary lessons about asides and appositives.

And you will hear no complaints from seventh graders about the opportunity to act out an overly dramatic Shakespearean death scene.

You can read Mr. Stanbury's article titled You Shall Piece it Out With a Piece of Your Performance on the Folger Shakespeare Library's blog.
