St. Mark’s Alumnus, Teacher, Friend
St. Mark’s School of Texas mourns the loss of a highly respected graduate and longtime faculty member, Mr. Stephen M. Seay ’68. The school’s faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and students reflect on a life of extraordinary service and commitment to St. Mark’s that extended throughout his adult life. Eugene McDermott Headmaster Arnie Holtberg commented, “We lost a St. Mark’s legend today, a teacher devoted to his craft and to his students. I am deeply saddened by Steve’s passing and will always be grateful for the enormous contributions that he made to our school and to the teaching of science.”
A native of Dallas, Steve graduated from St. Mark’s in 1968 before going on to earn a B.A. in Psychology from Stanford University. He returned to Dallas and began his teaching career at St. Mark’s in 1973. In 1984 Steve went on to earn an M.A.T. from the University of Texas – Dallas. Steve’s role as a leading faculty member in the Science Department over a twenty-five year period, including a seven year stint as Chairman, was profoundly important. St. Mark’s has long been recognized as a pioneer in the sciences, thanks in large measure to Steve’s exceptional leadership. In addition to his role as Chairman of the Science Department, Steve also taught Earth Science, Geology, Astronomy, Life Science, Physics and Scientific Photography. He also served as Director of the St. Mark’s Planetarium and Observatory and was an active leader in the Middle School Wilderness and Outdoors Program. He was well known for taking students on great adventures to places far and wide, from the woods and rolling hills of central Texas and New Mexico to Colorado and Alaska. He was a passionate naturalist and devoted outdoorsman.
Steve’s leadership was recognized formally numerous times during his lengthy tenure at St. Mark’s. He received the Murrell Excellence in Teaching Award in 1984 and then again in 1997. The St. Mark's School of Texas Alumni Association bestowed one of its highest honors on Steve in 2000 when he became the third recipient of the Ralph B. Rogers Award for Excellence in Teaching. Upon his retirement, the Science Department Chairmanship was renamed the Stephen M. Seay ’68 Science Department Chair, a position that is held today by veteran Biology teacher and his longtime friend, Mrs. Stephanie Barta. When learning of Steve’s passing she said, “Steve was a wonderful colleague, a gifted teacher, and a loyal friend. His contributions to teaching exellence and experiential learning at St. Mark’s will be felt for generations.” Click here to read more on the life and legacy of Steve Seay.
