Nearburg '68 Breaks World Record

On the morning of September 21, 2010, Charles Nearburg ’68 guided his car, The Spirit of Rett, to a world speed record, and his streamliner became the fastest single engine car in history. After years of racing in the Bonneville Salt Flats, setting numerous records along the way, this latest achievement places Nearburg truly in a class by himself.

The Spirit of Rett made two phenomenal speed runs. The first run averaged 417 MPH with an exist speed of 422.6. The return run, made under more difficult track conditions, averaged 411.7 MPH with a top speed of 417.65. The average speed of approximately 414.4 MPH exceeded the longstanding record set back in 1965 by Bob and Bill Summers in their famous streamline car, Goldenrod.

Charles dedicated this remarkable achievement to his late son Rett Nearburg '02, who passed away from Ewing's Sarcoma in 2005, and to all the children fighting cancer. Charles has been a member of the St. Mark’s Board of Trustees since 1992 and currently serves as one of the Chairs of the Centennial Challenge Campaign.
