A Dinner Celebration held Tuesday night on campus in the A. Earl Cullum, Jr., Alumni Commons marked the public launch of The Centennial Challenge, a comprehensive fundraising campaign with an overall goal of $110,000,000.
Board of Trustees President George Bayoud ’73 welcomed more than 350 guests saying, “We gather here tonight to celebrate the Campaign’s early success and to share our dreams and aspirations for the School’s future.” Excitement filled the W. W. Browning Great Hall as Mr. Bayoud introduced the three Chairs of The Centennial Challenge, Ross Perot ’77, Charles Nearburg ’68, and Carl Sewell ’61, all of whom spoke with inspiring passion for St. Mark’s and immense gratitude for the vision, dedication, and generosity of the School’s early leaders.
Mr. Bayoud went on to say, “Bottom line, this Campaign is about making sure we have the finest teachers in America and ensuring that the most talented boys in Dallas have access to St. Mark’s regardless of their family’s financial circumstance. The Campaign is certainly comprehensive and has other goals, but at the end of the day, our focus is on increasing support for the teachers and the boys.”
Speaking on behalf of Campaign Co-chairs Kathy Crow and Wallace Hall ’80, Casey McManemin ’79 delivered an inspiring and heart-felt commentary on the objectives for the Centennial Challenge. “The aspirations we’ve identified have been carefully and thoughtfully considered with extensive involvement and feedback from alumni, parents, and faculty.”
Almost four years in planning, the Centennial Challenge will provide new Master Teaching Chairs, expand faculty professional development, increase student Financial Aid, strengthen campus facilities, augment Student Life opportunities, and add support for current operations through the St. Mark’s Fund. Roughly half of the Campaign is devoted to increasing the long-term endowment, with the balance going to new and improved facilities, including the recently completed Centennial Hall and the Robert K. Hoffman Center, as well as providing current funding for new and existing programs.
Mr. McManemin further explained, “As someone who has had the chance to be intimately involved in every aspect of the preparation, I can say with great confidence that we begin this Campaign tonight with a clear sense of purpose and determination – determination to shape St. Mark’s next 100 Years in the same fashion that our founders did."
The evening complemented Monday's All School Assembly, where over one thousand students, faculty, staff, alumni, and parents gathered to celebrate the Centennial Challenge launch.
