Newspaper Named Crown Finalist

For the fifth consecutive year, The ReMarker student newspaper at St. Mark’s School of Texas has been named a Crown Finalist by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA). Founded in 1925 and sponsored by Columbia University, CSPA is the nation’s oldest and largest organization for scholastic journalists. Crown winners are selected from entries submitted by over 1,850 CSPA member schools.

A committee of journalism educators and professional journalists evaluates publications on writing and editing, coverage, editorial leadership, design, graphics and artwork and photography. Thirty-five student newspapers from across the U.S. made the cut to Crown Finalist this year. In March, newspaper staffs will learn whether they receive the Gold Crown (highest award) or the Silver Crown. For the past four years, The ReMarker has received the Gold Crown designation. Editor of The ReMarker was Tomi Maxted ’07. Other 2007 graduates who held key staff positions include John Aldous, Darius White, Philip Azouz, Eric Rosenbaum, David Sabeti, Drew Kirchhofer, Evan Lewis, Michael Bullard, and Josh Dunn.

Current students who contributed include seniors Daniel Valella, Cody Dunlap, Jake McAuley, Junior Manzanares, James Blair, Matt Martin, Chase Serafino, Rohan Muralidhar, and Jacques Barjon; juniors Dylan Birch, John Bryant, Ryan Constantine, Jeffrey Herpers, Patrick Neligan, Nate Nicholas, Dhruv Singhal, Steven Zuckerman, Casey Drake, Nick Dyslin, David Henry, Chris Rhoades, Blake Winston and Eric Wickes; and sophomores Sloan Rudberg and John Montgomery.

Fourteen journalism students and adviser Ray Westbrook will attend CSPA’s annual convention in New York this March.
