Lions Sports Update (Feb. 05)

Wrestling
This past Thursday, January 30, the Lion wrestlers hosted Senior Night in Spencer Gymnasium against the Episcopal School of Dallas. The Lions matched up well against the Eagles and came out victorious:  St. Mark’s 60 to ESD 24. For the match, the pins came from Zach Golle (0:54 seconds), Beau Bacon (3:10 minutes), Jackson Barnes (0:27seconds), and Oliver Loehr (1:14 minutes).  This Saturday, February 7, the Lion wrestlers travel to St. John’s in Houston to compete in the Texas Prep State Wrestling tournament starting at 8:30 am. The top three in each weight class qualify for the National Prep Wrestling tournament at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania, which will be held on February 19-21.

Basketball
The St. Mark’s varsity basketball team competed in three conference counter games last week. First, at Oakridge on Thursday, underclassmen Wes Jackson and Trevez McMiller both reached double figures to spearhead a balanced attack with which the Lions jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Junior Dawson Battie turned in a double-double and repeated the performance the following night in front of a raucous Hicks Gymnasium home crowd. The boys in navy and gold defeated St. Andrew’s comfortably in that contest, thanks in large part to Spencer Hopkin and his electric play off the dribble alongside fellow senior and backcourt mate, Pranav Danda, who had a stellar 5-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio. On Saturday afternoon, the team completed a three-day sweep with their third convincing win, this time over St. Stephen’s. Junior AJ Thomas had his second double-figure scoring performance in as many games, and senior Cooper Guiler and junior Asher Collins each hustled their way to a handful of rebounds to ensure a perfect 6-0 start to SPC play. To close out SPC counter play, the Lions host Ft. Worth Country Day on Thursday (7 pm), followed by the regular season finale, the ever-exciting senior night against Prestonwood Christian Academy on Friday at 6 pm. All games are home, as is the SPC championship tournament on February 12-14.

Soccer
Last week St. Mark’s Soccer posted a 10-0 victory over a depleted Oakridge team, followed by a scoreless draw against St. Andrews. David Dickson scored a hat trick in the first match, and JP Hanks and Price Meyers both contributed a brace. Wyatt Gair, Cristian Duarte, and Riggs Bean also made it onto the scoresheet. Assist credits went to Hanks, Ian Cho, Kazim Hussain, Alex Dahlander, Max Bean, and Ryan Hirzel. The second match was an end-to-end affair, with St. Mark’s having the run of play, despite the absence of several key seniors. Nevertheless, neither team could find the net by full time. Alex Gawel recorded the shutout. To finish this week, the Lions host Ft. Worth Country Day in the final SPC counter game of the regular season on Thursday at 7 pm and then host HSAA on Friday for Senior Night at 7 pm.

Swim
The varsity swim team had their meet in Austin canceled due to the aftermath of the winter storm, so the Lions and Hockaday team joined together and held a time trials meet to give the swimmers a chance to compete against the clock.  The team continues to train as they near the SPC Championships
