Athletic Awards

As the school year ended, St. Mark’s honored its athletes and coaches at this year’s Athletic Banquet on Friday, May 15, 2026.

“It has been a pleasure to watch our student-athletes compete with passion, emotion, and enthusiasm and consistently demonstrate good sportsmanship, regardless of the score,” said Sean Lissemore, Athletic Director. “I applaud all our student-athletes for your steadfast commitment to your respective sports and for always representing St. Mark’s with character and class.”

During the banquet, St. Mark’s honored numerous individual athletes for their outstanding performances, including the School’s four major athletic awards.

The Tony Briggs Spirit Award is presented to a senior who has been constructively active in creating spirit and enthusiasm among the student body for the support of athletic teams and events, has been engaged in a variety of athletics as a competitor, has displayed, as a participant, enthusiasm and dedication, and has shown sportsmanship among the students and athletes of schools with which we compete.

The recipient of this award is someone who has consistently modeled what it means to be a Marksman during his time here. This 4-time letterman and 5-season athlete was a Texas High School Lacrosse League All-District 1st Team selection in 2024, and he earned All-District Honorable Mention this past year. He was an All-SPC Lacrosse selection in 2024 and proudly served as one of our Super Fan Men this past year, promoting school spirit and cheering on his fellow Marksmen. He also demonstrated strong leadership as a captain of the lacrosse team this past spring, helping to lead our team to its first SPC championship since 2013. The 2026 recipient of the Briggs Spirit Award is Weston Chance ’26.

The Red Barr Award is presented to a senior who has demonstrated the ideals by which Red Barr lived: patience, understanding, sportsmanship, and dedication to excellence in the classroom as well as on the playing field.

The recipient of this award is a well-rounded Marksman who is the definition of what it means to be a scholar-athlete. Most students find a single varsity sport demanding, but this young man balances elite athletics with 11 AP classes. His academic record is truly a masterclass in determination, with a mind that spans vastly different academic disciplines. He has won the History Department Book Award, was inducted into the Computer Science Honors Society, and is a National Spanish Exam Gold Medalist. He earned the prestigious Princeton Book Award and has served as the Senior Director of the Economics Team. Beyond being an exceptional scholar, he has contributed across our campus in numerous different ways. He leads the TELOS Mentorship Program and directs the Lion & Sword Society. He also serves as the President of the Student Alumni Association and was elected as Student Class President for three consecutive years. The 2026 recipient of the Red Barr Award is Andrew Zhang ’26.

The Arnold E. Holtberg Athletic Leadership Award is presented to a senior who embodies the ideals of character and leadership in every facet of his participation on the playing fields, in the locker room, and around campus.

The recipient of this award has consistently demonstrated all the qualities we look for in a leader at our school. Hard working, honest, dedicated, and humble are just some of the words that describe him. When this young man arrived in ninth grade, he was quiet, but he let his integrity and work ethic do the talking. He always demanded excellence from himself first and then from his teammates. He soon became a top center in the state and then eventually became one of the best in the nation. He was a 7-time letterman, 8-season athlete, and 3-time team captain. He was also a 2-time TISCA State MVP in water polo and a 2-time ALL-SPC honoree in swimming. Furthermore, he was a 4-time TISCA water polo state champion, 4-time SPC team champion, and a member of the Team USA 18U men’s national water polo team in 2025. The 2026 recipient of the Arnold E. Holtberg Leadership Award is Oliver Geheb ’26.

The Thomas S. Adams Athletic Plaque is awarded for consistently fine contributions to the attitudes, the performance standards, and the sportsman-like conduct of the St. Mark’s varsity athletics.

The recipient of this award is a fierce competitor who has the heart of a lion. He has dominated his respective sport and consistently demonstrated the tireless work ethic and competitive drive of a champion. Regardless of the circumstances, this Marksman was always willing and able to rise to the challenge and compete at a high level. He was a master of remaining calm under pressure and often demonstrated nerves of steel when it mattered most. Highly decorated during his time at St. Mark’s, he was a 4-time letterman and 2-time captain of the golf team. He was also a 4-time All-SPC golfer and 3-time team MVP. Over the course of his career, he earned 6 first-place finishes and 3 second-place finishes in tournament play and was a one-time SPC team champion. This past spring, his Rolex American Junior Golf Association national ranking has fluctuated between 89 and 110, which is incredible considering there are over one hundred and fifty thousand boys playing high school golf. The 2026 recipient of the Thomas S. Adams athletic plaque is Duff McKay ’26.
