Lions Win State

Water Polo
In one of their most complete games of the year, the Lions took care of business against the Houston Rebels to claim their seventh consecutive TISCA State championship. The Lions came out strong in the first quarter, creating several excellent opportunities in front of the cage. However, the Rebels’ goalie, who earned a spot on the national team training squad this past season, kept the Lions to just one goal scored by freshman Hudson Oskoui. Senior Julian Gerstle was equally impressive in the cage, making multiple key saves to give the Lions a 1–0 lead after the first quarter. The second quarter belonged to the Lions, who found the back of the net five times. Senior co-captain Tyson Diep scored twice, while juniors James McGinnis, Eddie Stehel, and Will Behnke each added a goal. Defensively, the Rebels continued to create dangerous opportunities, but Gerstle rose to the challenge, allowing just two goals despite facing six quality chances. The Lions maintained their momentum in the third quarter, outscoring the Rebels 3–2. McGinnis scored twice more, while Behnke added his second goal of the game, giving the Lions a commanding 9–4 lead heading into the final quarter. The Lions came out strong once again in the fourth, holding off a furious wave of Rebel attacks during the opening two minutes. By the time Houston found the net for its second goal of the quarter, less than a minute remained, and the championship was all but secured. For seniors Melvin, Diep, Zhou, Mayo, Bhandari, and Gerstle, they closed out the final game of their Marksmen career with a championship!

Volleyball
Last week, the varsity volleyball team had two SPC counter matches.  On Homecoming Friday, the Lions hosted Kinkaid.  The team came out firing with Chris Householder scoring 8 straight points with some aggressive serving.  The team never looked back and won in straight sets.  Then on Saturday, St. Mark’s hosted a tough Awty International School team.  The match was close, but the Lions never off balance as they would win the match in 3 sets.  This week, the Lions host St. Stephen’s on Friday and St. Andrew’s on Saturday in their final SPC counter matches of the season.

Football
On Friday night the Lions’ football team hosted St. John’s for Homecoming and Senior Night. In a back-and-forth contest, the Lions lost a hard-fought game 28-35. Senior David Dickson carried the load for the Lions' offense, compiling 183 total yards and three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving). QB Blaize Schuhmacher went 13-for-19 on the night, throwing a touchdown and rushing one in. A variety of Lions contributed offensively and defensively, but it was not enough to hold off the Mavericks. The Lions play their final game of the regular season this Friday at Houston Christian.

Fencing
