Athletics Highlights

With a powerful 79% success in Face-offs and a 59% save rate in goal, Episcopal School of Dallas denied St. Mark’s its first chance at a State Championship Sunday; after tries over three consecutive years, it was an ESD 7 to 5 victory.

The game was a dog-fight through the first half, with the Eagles taking an early and Lions a later advantage, only to see the 1st period ending tied at  1 apiece and the 2nd at 2 apiece.  With LSM Luke Klein shadowing ESD’s All-American attack Rhett Miller, it was up to All-State seniors Hollis Meyer in goal and defenseman Heath Townsend, and All-District honorable mention defensemen seniors Zach Streit, Hawkins Golden and junior Arthur Brousseau to hold off the remaining explosive Eagle’s offense.   On the other end, the Lion’s own explosive offense put up 37 shots, only to have 2 by All-State attack Spencer Branch and All-American middie George Lauinger (1 disallowed), joined by 1 each from attacks freshman All-District Jeff Perkins and sophomore John Bryant find the back of the net.  In the end, a time of possession advantage provided opportunity for ESD middie Hawn Franklin-Mitchell (4), attacks All-American Alex Hardt, DJ Sprenger and Matt Looney to score 7 goals on 23 shots, coupled with All-District honorable mention goalie Colt Power’s light’s-out 22 saves, and allowed time to expire with St. Mark’s 2-goals short of their goal.

At conclusion of the 7 to 5 ESD victory, ESD players Rhett Miller and Alex Hardt, as well as St. Mark’s George Lauinger and Spencer Branch were named All-Americans; ESD’s Hawn Franklin-Mitchell was awarded the Offensive MVP and St. Mark’s Heath Townsend Defensive MVP, with ESD’s Colt Power the Game’s MVP.
