It is with genuine sadness that St. Mark’s announces the loss of Lamar Hunt – Life Trustee and great friend of the School. Lamar succumbed to cancer on Wednesday evening, December 13, 2006.
His involvement with St. Mark’s dates back more than 40 years. Lamar’s oldest son, Lamar, Jr., graduated from St. Mark’s in 1975, and his two other sons, Clark and Daniel, graduated from the School in 1983 and 1996, respectively. In fact, he had at least one son enrolled here for more than 30 consecutive years.
A tireless advocate for St. Mark’s, Lamar served on the Board of Trustees for more than 25 years and was named a Life Trustee in 1999. He engaged himself fully in the life of the School and in his sons’ activities.
Over time, Lamar earned a reputation as one of St. Mark’s most enthusiastic fans. He cooked hamburgers before Friday night home football games, helped produce highlight films for the boys and their families, served as a volunteer timekeeper through rainy track meets, and regularly provided food for our boys at away games and competitions. Lamar even convinced Howard Cosell to add color commentary for the football highlight film in Clark’s senior year.
Lamar’s leadership in athletics on a national and even international scale is legendary. He played an instrumental role in building the American Football League, the United States Soccer Federation, and the WCT – World Championship Tennis Circuit (the precursor to the ATP – Association of Tennis Professionals). Lamar is also a member of the Professional Football Hall of Fame, the National Soccer Hall of Fame, and the International Tennis Hall of Fame. In addition to their long-time ownership of the Kansas City Chiefs, the Hunts have been owners in the NBA and are now active owners and participants in professional soccer.
On September 30, 2005, St. Mark’s dedicated the Norma and Lamar Hunt Family Stadium, made possible through the generosity and leadership of Clark and Daniel Hunt. The stadium honors Norma and Lamar and pays tribute to their extraordinary service to the School.
“I am deeply saddened by the loss of a true friend,” said Eugene McDermott Headmaster Arnie Holtberg. “Lamar was a gentleman, leader, and innovator who inspired all of us. His example of selflessness and humility will endure. He brought a passion, commitment, and genuineness to every endeavor and project. St. Mark’s has lost a champion whose devotion to the School was exceptional.”
Lamar is survived by his wife Norma, his three sons, Lamar, Jr., Clark, and Daniel, his daughter, Sharron Munson, and 14 grandchildren.
