Lion Sports Update (Sep 16)
WATER POLO
Last weekend, the varsity water polo team traveled to the Texas Gulf Coast and came away with a pair of impressive victories over Strake Jesuit and defending UIL champion Clear Creek. Against Strake, the Lions jumped out to a 6-1 first-quarter lead behind goals from James McGinnis, Eddie Stehel, Luke Nguyen, Tyson Diep, and Emiliano Mayo. St. Mark’s carried a 12-4 advantage into halftime before shutting out Strake in the second half to secure a 16-4 victory. Nguyen led the attack with multiple goals, while freshman goalkeeper Charlie McGinnis recorded nine saves.
After a one-game break, the Lions faced third-ranked Clear Creek in their toughest test of the season so far. St. Mark’s took a 5-3 first-quarter lead behind two goals from Diep and three from Stehel, then extended the advantage to 9-6 at halftime. James McGinnis helped lead the second-half attack as the Lions entered the fourth quarter ahead 12-8. A group of Hudson Oskoui, Taiting Zhou, Andrew Diep, Santana, Nguyen, and Mayo helped contain the Clear Creek starters during a critical stretch, with Oskoui and Zhou each adding a goal. The Lions closed out the 14-11 victory, while Charlie McGinnis recorded eight saves in goal.
FOOTBALL
Last Thursday, the varsity football team hosted the ESD Eagles. After falling behind 20-0 in the second quarter, the Lions battled back with two scores to make it 27-13 in the fourth. St. Mark’s then moved deep into Eagles territory with a well-executed hook-and-lateral from Blaize Schuhmacher to Wyatt Hanson to Donnell Dickson, but the comeback was halted by the Lions’ third turnover of the evening. David Dickson caught two touchdown passes from Schuhmacher and finished with 110 total yards. The 2-1 Lions travel to The Covenant School this Friday looking to return to the win column.
VOLLEYBALL
The varsity volleyball team traveled to Greenhill on Tuesday, overcoming a slow start to make the match competitive before ultimately falling to the Hornets. The Lions responded Thursday against Fort Worth Country Day, asserting control and defeating the Falcons in straight sets. This week, St. Mark’s has three road matches, traveling to Red River on Tuesday before heading to Houston for SPC counters against St. John’s on Friday and Episcopal High School on Saturday.
CROSS COUNTRY
The varsity cross country team had the week off from competition as the Lions prepare for the Lucas Lovejoy XC Festival this Saturday at 8 a.m. at Myers Park in McKinney.
