Lion Sports Update (Nov. 4)

Volleyball
The varsity volleyball team closed out its regular season with two SPC counter victories over the weekend. Facing St. Stephen’s, which entered the match with an identical 5-3 conference record, the Lions dominated in straight sets. On Saturday, St. Mark’s hosted St. Andrew’s, a team that proved more competitive than its record suggested, but the Lions controlled the match throughout.

St. Mark’s finished the regular season with a 7-3 SPC record (15-5 overall) and enters the SPC Championship Tournament riding a six-match winning streak. The No. 4-seeded Lions will face No. 5 Greenhill at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6, in Hicks Gym at the Zierk Athletic Center, as St. Mark’s hosts the tournament.

Football
The varsity football team traveled to Houston Christian last Friday for its final game of the season. A defensive battle kept the score tied 6-6 at halftime, highlighted by Henry McGill’s 43-yard field goal late in the second quarter.

After Houston Christian scored twice in the third quarter to take a 19-6 lead, the Lions rallied in the fourth. Quarterback Blaize Schuhmacher connected with Wyatt Hanson for a touchdown, one of Hanson’s six receptions for 67 yards. Following a key defensive stop, the Lions drove into the red zone again, but a late interception sealed the game for Houston Christian.

Defensively, Mac Saye and JT Teinert each recorded double-digit tackles, Tobias Pulido recovered a fumble, and Marshall Sudbury blocked a punt. Despite a strong comeback effort, the Lions fell short in a closely contested season finale.

Cross Country
The varsity cross country team had a break from competition last weekend as it prepares to host the SPC Championship on Saturday, Nov. 7, at Norbuck Park in Dallas. The boys’ race begins at 9 a.m.

Fencing
The varsity fencing team traveled to Hockaday on Wednesday, Oct. 28, for a competitive scrimmage and Senior Night recognitions. The Lions represented St. Mark’s well throughout the competition.
