Two new additions were made in the Mathematics Department. Mr. Paul Mlakar earned his Bachelor of Science degree from The Ohio State University, and his M.A. from the University of Houston. Most recently, Mr. Mlakar worked for Region IV Education Service Center in Houston. There he provided professional development to middle and high school mathematics teachers in algebra, precalculus, trigonometry, geometry, proportional reasoning and algebraic reasoning, in addition to other curriculum development work. Previous to that, Paul was employed by Space Center Houston where he directed the public programs, developed curriculum and provided professional development to teachers, and he managed the Johnson Space Center Educator Resource Center. Mr. Mlakar’s favorite time of the day is evening and his favorite vacation place is any ski resort. Double Stuffed Oreo Cookies are his favorite junk food and his favorite movie is “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.” His family is special to him: he listed his oldest brother as his teen age idol, and said he is proudest of his seven brothers and sisters and 11 nieces and nephews. Guests at his Fantasy Dinner Party would be Albert Einstein, Sir Isaac Newton, Bill Clinton, Robin Williams, Britney Spears, and Jennifer Garner. Born in Lorain, Ohio, Paul says he is happiest “when the Buckeyes are winning!”
Dr. Martin Stegemoeller also joined the Mathematic department faculty this year. “Dr. S.” came to St. Mark’s from Lake Forest Academy where he taught English, Philosophy, and Math, and was the Varsity Tennis Coach and the Assistant Golf Coach. Dr. Stegemoeller earned his B.A. in Philosophy from Northwestern University, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University. Martin says his favorite time of the day is 10:00pm and his favorite vacation spot is Cape Hatteras. Guests at his Fantasy Dinner Party would be Isabel Archer, Gustav Mahler, Julian Sorel, Elizabeth Bennet, Tom and Eden Elieff. Martin’s favorite junk food is pizza, his favorite movie “The Designated Mourner,” and his teenage idol was Michael Milken.
Mr. William Forteith is no stranger to St. Mark’s. After graduating from here in 1996, Mr. Forteith earned a B.A. in English and History from Cornell University, and will complete a M.A. in English from Middlebury College in August of 2004. Last year he taught English at The Parish Episcopal School in Farmers Branch. He is also an alumnus teacher from St. Mark’s Mesquite Program where he taught in the summer school from 1997 to 2000. Will married Heather Zrubek in November this year and he and Heather have a German Shepherd named Milla. Will’s Fantasy Dinner Party would include Yoda, Henry James, Harry Parker (Harvard Crew Coach), Dr. Van Helsing (From Dracula), Leonidas (King of Sparta) and Guenevere. His favorite time of the day is early morning on the water. Favorite vacation spot is New Orleans, favorite junk good is found at Taco Bueno,a nd his favorite movie is “Braveheart.” He lists his heroes as his two grandfathers, both of whom fought in World War II. It’s no surprise to note that Will says he is happiest when traveling with Heather.
Ms. Laura Prieto joined the Foreign Language faculty to teach Spanish. Her most recent teaching experience was at Friends Meting School in Ijamsville, Maryland. Ms. Prieto earned her B.A. in Modern Languages Teaching from Universidad Pontifica Bolivariana. She was born in Manizales, Colombia, South America and says her favorite vacation place is Sta. Marta-Colombia. Laura’s favorite junk food is a Big Mac from McDonald’s. Her favorite movie is “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” favorite time of the day is 4:00 in the afternoon. Guests at her Fantasy Dinner Party would be Tom Cruise, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Julia Roberts, He-Man, Wonder Woman, and Massinger Z (from Japan animation cartoon). When she was a teenager she loved the Puerto Rican boy band Menudo. Her hero is Jesus Christ. Laura is proud of her family (who now live in Plano, TX) and says she is happiest when she’s asleep!
Ms. Pamela Abbott also joined the Foreign Language faculty this year to teach Spanish. Born in Santiago, Chile, Ms. Abbott most recently taught Spanish and Latin at Scofield Christian School. She is also fluent in French! Ms. Abbott earned her B.B.A. from Southern Methodist University. Pamela has a daughter, Faith, who is 12 years old, and a miniature poodle named Derby. Her favorite time of the day is 5:00 -6:00am. She loves to travel, so she doesn’t really have a favorite place to vacation. No problems naming a favorite junk food, however, it is chocolate! She says the guests at her Fantasy Dinner Party would simply be all her friends, and that she is happiest when she is reading or cooking for others.
Mrs. Sandy Hall is one of two teachers hired to teach piano at St. Mark’s to students in grades 1-12. Mrs. Hall was born in Scottdale, Pennsylvania, and received her B.A. from the University of Colorado. She has had private studios in Pennsylvania, Florida, Colorado, and presently in University Park, Texas, and has taught private and group piano lessons for over 25 years. Sandy is married to Frank Hall and they have four children, Casey (age 20), Laura (age 19), Alyse (age 18), and Ashley (age 15). The Hall family also have a Yorkie named Cowboy. Sandy says her heroes are moms who raise happy kids. The guests at her Fantasy Dinner Party are all musicians : Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Debussy, Gershwin, Van Cliburn, and Billy Joel. Mrs. Hall says her favorite time of the day is early evening and her favorite vacation sport is the beach – any beach! She lists Bryers Butter Pecan Ice Cream as her favorite junk food, and she loves any movie that makes her cry. Her teen age idol was Robert Redford. She says she is happiest when she is with her kids.
Mr. Michael King also came to St. Mark’s to teach piano. Most recently he was the Artistic Director and Founder of Southwest Children’s Chorus, Inc., a chorus for children ages 9-13 of Southwest Dallas County, numbering 200 children in 5 choirs. He was also the Organist and Director of Music at First Presbyterian Church in Lancaster, Texas, as well as an independent teacher of piano and organ. His undergraduate study was in Music Education at the University of North Texas, and he did graduate studies at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey. A native of Dallas, Michael has a Maine Coon Cat named Callie and a Cocker Spaniel named Dolly. Mr. King’s favorite vacation place is New York City or Central Eurpoe. He prefers the late evening hours of the day, and says he loves too many movies to name a favorite. His favorite junk food is pizza. Guest at his Fantasy Dinner Party would be his late grandparents, George Gershwin, Stephen Sondheim, Bach, Mozart, and his family and friends. He says his parents are his heroes and that he is happiest when surrounded by family and/or friends.
Mr. Hayward Hamilton Lee signed on as St. Mark’s Varsity Football and Varsity Lacrosse Coach this year. He most recently held those positions at The Episcopal School of Dallas. Mr. Lee has a B.A. in History from Washington & Lee University and an M.B.A. in Finance from Rice University. He played Varsity Soccer and Lacrosse at Washington & Lee.
