Sixth grader’s recipe for success

The perfect bite of food requires proper ingredients, technique and ‘pop’. Toby Hyun ’29 has the right mix as a baker in the 11th season of Food Network’s Kids Baking Championship. The TV show has 12 young bakers vying for the title of Kids Baking Champion and a spot in Food Network Magazine.

“I applied for the show through the Food Network website by submitting an audition tape,” Hyun said. “I was surprised when they reached out to me to participate in the casting process.”

The ten-week competition is hosted and judged by actress Valerie Bertinelli and celebrity chef Duff Goldman. This season features a new twist, testing not only the children’s baking skills but their business savvy. Contestants create the latest dessert trends and most popular sweets in business-oriented challenges, from logo cakes to market trend cupcakes, viral mashup desserts and power lunch dessert imposters.

“My favorite part of being on the show was the 11 other kid bakers who all share the same passion as me,” Hyun said. “I learned a lot from them, and we are still very good friends and chat every day. As one of the show directors put it, out of all 11 seasons, we bonded the fastest!”

Hyun can trace his baking interests back to playing chef in his toy-kitchen and watching cooking videos, which are his favorite. He started by carving fruit into animals and eventually transitioned to baking, finding inspiration from the dishes and desserts he enjoyed growing up in New York City. His appearance on national television is just another step on his culinary journey.

“The entrepreneurial kid bakers on the new season…are the most impressive batch of contestants yet,” said Jane Latman, president of home and food content and streaming at Warner Bros. Discovery, when interviewed in Variety Magazine. “Viewers will be amazed at their creativity and aptitude as they tackle each challenge.”

Follow Toby on the 11th season of Food Network’s Kids Baking Championship which premieres Dec. 26 at 8 p.m. on the Food Network.
