Topping Off Ceremony

The on-campus construction hit a high note on Thursday, February 14 when a crane raised the final steel beam to complete the top of Centennial Hall. Middle and Upper School students and teachers poured into the safe zone of the construction site to witness the topping out ceremony, and several boys watched from the windows of Davis Hall.

The beam holds special significance as the Class of 2008 spent some time decorating it on Wednesday afternoon. The boys' signatures and graffiti will be visible from inside the third floor mechanical room in Centennial Hall.

After sharing the reason for the ceremonial evergreen tree* atop the building, Headmaster Arnie Holtberg thanked the BECK Group for its outstanding work on the project thus far. He also acknowledged the current Board of Trustees members in attendance, including President Robert Sinclair '74, Vice President George Bayoud '73, and Wallace Hall '80.

*According to an ancient Scandinavian tradition, passed down by immigrants to America, an evergreen tree is placed on top of a structure during a topping off ceremony to symbolize growth and bring luck.
