2024 Athletic Banquet

As the school year ended, St. Mark’s honored its athletes and coaches at this year’s Athletic Banquet on Friday, May 17, 2024.
“The legacy that you leave at St. Mark’s is far greater than wins, losses, awards, or achievements,” athletic director Sean Lissemore said. “It is about the impact you’ve had on others and the example you set for future Marksmen to follow.”
During the banquet, St. Mark’s honored numerous individual athletes for their outstanding performances, including the School’s four major athletic awards.
The Tony Briggs Spirit Award is presented to a senior who has been constructively active in creating spirit and enthusiasm among the student body to the support of athletic teams and events, has been engaged in a variety of athletics as a competitor, has displayed, as a participant, enthusiasm and dedication, and has shown sportsmanship among the students and athletes of schools with which we compete.
The recipient of this award is a well-rounded young man who exemplifies the Marksman values of character, good sportsmanship, and servant leadership. He was someone who strived to overcome any obstacle in his way and always did so with incredible grace and humility. The defining factor of this student-athlete was his unwavering commitment to always supporting his fellow classmates regardless of the circumstances. His positive energy and competitive spirit weren’t just limited to his own athletic endeavors as he could be found on the sidelines of countless games jumping around with excitement after every big play and cheering on our teams with genuine passionate and enthusiasm. Even after his football playing days concluded, he would still carry a football around campus because he loved the game so much and used this as a way to meet new people and spark up conversations by offering to play a game of catch. The 2024 recipient of the Tony Briggs Spirit Award is Patrick Flanagan ’24.
The Red Barr Award is presented to a senior who has demonstrated the ideals by which Red Barr lived: patience, understanding, sportsmanship and dedication to excellence in the classroom as well as on the playing field.
The recipient of this award is a well-rounded scholar-athlete whose positive attitude, leadership, and kindness was infectious to others. His athletic talent was aptly complimented by his strong work ethic and steadfast dedication to academic excellence. Don’t let his affable demeanor fool you, this Marksman is a fierce competitor who constantly pushed others around him to be better every day. Furthermore, he is someone that our younger Marksman can look up to and emulate because he always did things the right way. He was a 7-season letterman and 8- season athlete and served as the Captain of the Baseball team this past year and earned MVP and all SPC honors in 2023. He was also the Football team’s Iron Lion Award recipient this past fall. Coach Hunter describes him as a leader by example and someone who is willing to do any task, noting that he would regularly carry buckets, move pitching screens and batting cages, and pick up dugout trash as a Senior Captain. Coach Hunter also commended him for his outstanding sportsmanship and steadfast commitment to his team. The 2024 recipient of the Red Barr Award is Grayson Redmond ’24.

The Arnold E. Holtberg Athletic Leadership Award is presented to a senior who embodies the ideals of character and leadership in every facet of his participation on the playing fields, in the locker room, and around campus.
This next remarkable student-athlete excelled in everything that he did at St. Mark’s. He was an 8-season letterman and 8-season athlete who served as a two-time Captain of both the Swimming and Water Polo teams. He was the Swim team’s “Coaches Award” recipient and earned All-SPC in Swimming in 2023 and 2024. He was a member of two SPC Championship Swim teams and four State Champion Water Polo Teams. He was also the Unsung Hero” Award winner, a TISCA 6th Team Water Polo All-American, and the water polo team Co-MVP. He is a tremendous leader who constantly pushed those around him to be the best version of themselves every day. His passion, his work ethic for the sport and life, and the way he challenges his teammates to get the most out of themselves no matter what level of play their future will hold are the reasons his legacy will live on for generations at St. Mark’s School of Texas. The recipient of the 2024 Arnold E. Holtberg Athletic Leadership Award is Ethan Gao ’24.
The Thomas S. Adams Athletic Plaque is awarded for consistently fine contributions to the attitudes, the performance standards and the sportsman-like conduct of the St. Mark’s varsity athletics.
This talented student-athlete was a dominant force in two sports. Every time he touched the ball great things would happen for our football and basketball teams. He is the complete package… athletic, smart, dedicated, coachable, selfless, and an outstanding teammate. It has been amazing to watch his growth over these past four years in Upper School, and he has worked incredibly hard to become the accomplished athlete that he is today. Furthermore, he has also approached his work in the classroom with this same dedication and is an exceptional student across all disciplines. This Marksman was a 5-season letterman and 6 -season athlete and served as the captain of the basketball team this past winter. He was a two-Time All-SPC Football selection in 2022 and 2023 and was honored as the team’s MVP this past season. He was also a two-time All-North Zone selection in basketball. Regardless of the sport, this student-athlete was a difference maker, and his athletic talents were maximized by his strong work ethic, tenacity, and desire to win. The 2024 recipient of the Thomas S. Adams Athletic Plaque is Lucas Blumenthal ’24.
