Lion Sports Update (09/12)

Volleyball
In a shortened week, the varsity volleyball team played one home match against the Red River Rattlers Club. St. Mark's team offense was efficient and robust and prevented the Rattlers from getting into their offensive system. St. Mark’s won 3-0. The Lions then participated in the Houston Cup tournament, an annual two-day event attended by both SPC north and south zone teams as well as some club teams. The team finished second in pool play on day one. Then, on day two, St. Mark’s won the 3-team crossover bracket to advance to the Gold Tournament bracket (a 4-team playoff for the championship). The Lions defeated TVS in the semifinal but lost to EHS in the championship match to finish 2nd overall. This week, the Lions travel to Greenhill on Tuesday (5:30 p.m.) and host Trinity Valley on Thursday (6:30 p.m.).

Football
On Friday night in Hunt Stadium, the football team hosted the defending SPC 3A Champion John Cooper School Dragons. After giving up a safety, the Lions took a 7-2 lead on a 4th down conversion from Jimmy Francis to Riggs Bean. The defense kept the Lions in the game all night, as linebackers William Everitt and Nolan Marcus each recorded over 16 tackles. Grayson Redmond added a key interception, Jack Baker sacked the Cooper QB, and Marshall Bagley made a critical tackle on a Cooper fake punt to give the Lions a chance to make a final drive. Trailing 8-7 in the 4th quarter, the Lions were faced with a 4th-and-1 in their own territory and an impending lightning storm. Jimmy Francis gained 28 yards on a QB option and set up a 24-yard touchdown strike to Lucas Blumenthal to put the Lions up 15-8. Lightning entered the area early in the 4th quarter and forced the game to end early. With the win, the Lions improved to 3-0 on the season. This week, the Lions travel to Frisco to take on 3-0 Legacy Christian at 7:00 p.m.

Cross Country
The varsity cross country team competed in Denton for the second time in two weeks at South Lakes Park hosted by Denton Guyer. The varsity team finished 4th out of nine teams in the Elite division. The Lions put three runners in the top 25. Raja Mehendale finished 19th (16:26), Noah Roby was 21st (16:41), and Asa McCaleb came in 24th (16:48). The JV team also finished 4th overall. Senior Henry Hoak led the way with a new personal best of (19:14) and a top 10 finish. Tiger Yang finished 11th in 19:23, and Nicholas Huang finished 27th (20:37). Next up, the Lions travel to the AP Ranch in Ft. Worth for an SPC preview meet!

Water Polo
The varsity water polo team did not have any competitions last week. This week, they are on the road to take on cross-town rival Highland Park at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday before heading down to Houston to take on Strake Jesuit and 2023 UIL State Champions Brazoswood.
