February Honors Black History

A number of campus activities are being held during the month of February in honor of Black History Month – from Chapel talks and assemblies, to group discussions and history lessons. Along with many other institutions around the country, St. Mark’s is once again taking this opportunity to recognize and highlight the rich history and contributions of African-Americans.

Preparations for Black History Month and the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday began in January when Dr. Terry Flowers, Headmaster and Director of St. Philip’s School and Community Center in Dallas, addressed the boys in Upper School Chapel about faith based perspective on student action and dedication.

One of the special guests this month is the visual artist and painter, Arthello Beck, who will be on campus the week of February 16. Among other things, Mr. Beck will work with Bill Kysor's art classes and explore his personal and professional experiences with young Marksmen. Some of Mr. Beck’s artwork is on display in the Nearburg Hall galleries from February 18-27.

Mr. Beck, a Dallas native and owner of Arthello's Gallery, works in oil, pencil, watercolor, and charcoal. He has been an Artist in Residence at The Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta and at Paul Quinn College. Mr. Beck is affiliated with the National Conference of Artists, Southwest Black Artists Guild, and the Southwest Alliance of African American Artists. You can visit the website www.b17.com/beck.htm to learn more about Mr. Beck and his work.

Other recent activities included a Chapel address given by Matt Jackson, St. Mark’s faculty member, in honor of Black History Month. This is the second year in a row Mr. Jackson has spoken in Chapel during Black History Month and his presentation was again well received by students and faculty alike.
