Lions Sports Update 04/17

Baseball

The Varsity Baseball team defeated counter foe Trinity Valley, 4-1 on April 10. This game was tight the entire way through, but the Lions scrappy play led to a few manufactured runs which proved to be the difference maker. On April 11, the Lions lost a hard fought battle, 6-4, to a much-improved Holland Hall team in Tulsa, OK. Costly early inning errors by the Lions gave the Dutch an insurmountable lead despite St. Mark's having several opportunities to capitalize during the middle to late innings. Then on April 12, St. Mark's blew an early 3-run lead and lost to Casady, 7-3 in Oklahoma City. The Lions are now 4-3 in the north zone and have two counter games remaining against Oakridge (away on April 22) and ESD (home vs. April 24). St. Mark's hopes to right the ship this week with two non-counter games at Greenhill on Wednesday and at home against THESA on Thursday, April 17.

Track & Field

The Track & Field Team enjoyed a successful weekend at the SPC North Zone Meet hosted by Greenhill. While not running at full strength but having good representation in all the events, St. Mark’s was able to win the meet with a score of 149 points. Many athletes contributed to the overall success of the team. It was a very windy two days which affected the sprints and hurdles positively and all the lap races negatively. Matt Brown ‘14 led all team members with 21 points highlighted by a gutsy, 1st place run in the 1600m. The 4 x 800m Relay team ran together for the first time and earned 1st place. JT Graass ‘16 won the 3200m in a fine time of 9:55.76. Dean Addy ‘14 ran PR’s in both hurdle races. Yima Asom ‘14 had a good long jump and 200m. The 4 x 100 Relay team ran for the first time this year and finished 5th. Harrison Perkins ’14 ran well in the 4 x 800R, open 800m and anchored the 4 x 400 Relay team to 3rd place. Dylan Altschuler ‘14 returned to action and ran well in the open 400m. Keith Kadesky ’17 had a huge PR in the Pole Vault with a mark of 11’ 0”. An improvement of 1 foot! All in all, a good weekend for the Lions. Their next competition will be in a quad-meet April 17 at St. Mark’s at 4 pm.

Tennis

The Varsity Tennis team enjoyed an excellent weekend of competition in Oklahoma. On April 11, the Lions defeated Holland Hall by a 5-0 score. All five matches was quite competitive, as the Dutch challenged the Lions at each spot. Sam Khoshbin '14 set the tone with a dominant performance at #1 singles, as did Will Garden '16 at the #3 spot. Both doubles teams won tough two-set matches to secure the victory, and Will Hardage '16 clinched the sweep, coming back and winning the second and third sets after dropping the first. On April 12, the Lions traveled to windy Oklahoma City to take on the Casady Cyclones. Once again, the Lions jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. The #1 doubles team of Anvit Reddy '16 and Albert Thieu '16 played a stellar match to defeat a tough team, and the #2 team of Gopal Raman '17 and Daran Zhao '17 clinched the 4-1 victory with a straight-set win. The team had a crucial home counter match against Greenhill on Wednesday, April 16 at home and will face non-league opponent Parish at home on Thursday, April 17 for Senior Day.

Water Polo

The Varsity Water Polo team played in the Grapevine Thunderstruck Tournament. They won the tournament, beating Rockwall (15-4) and Denton HS (14-4) in the process. The JV will play in the North Region JV Championships on Saturday, April 19 at the Carroll ISD Natatorium, and the Varsity plays again in the North Region Championships at the Lewisville ISD Westside Aquatics Center in Flower Mound April 25 and 26.

On Monday, April 21, the Varsity Golf team played in the Trinity Valley Invitational at Pecan Valley Golf Course in Ft. Worth. In incredibly tough weather conditions (temps in the 30s and wind gusts up to 40 mph), the Lions pulled off the victory. Team and individual scores are below.
