National Merit Honorees

On September 12, officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation named approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 53rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Among these stand-out scholars were 24 St. Mark’s seniors:

Ashwin Agarwal, Brian Banks, Carlos Bencomo, Arthur Brousseau, Nicholas Coyle, Cody Dunlap, Brenden Frerck, Houston Golden, Max Harris, Kevin Hsu, Alex Katz, Manuel Manzanares, Wayne Mitchell, Amaan Mitha, Nathaniel Nicholas, Paul Ockelmann, Travis Primm, James Sharp, Dhruv Singhal, Andrew Slottje, Daniel Valella, Jacob Vandermeer, Ian Wach, and William Young.

According to the NMSC press release, “more than 1.4 million juniors in nearly 21,000 high schools entered the 2008 National Merit Program by taking the 2006 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, which represents less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state.”

The National Merit Scholarship Program also recently announced the list of Commended Students, who are recognized for their outstanding academic promise. Recipients of a Letter of Commendation include:

Michael Jett Aubrey, Jacques Barjon, Daniel Burkert, Avinash Chavda, Michael Cole, Forrest Compton, Nicholas Dyslin, Gregory Fijolek, Benjamin Grisz, Timothy Kolostroubis, James McAuley, Michael Shashoua, and Jonathan Way.
