Lions Sports Update (11/6)

FOOTBALL
On Friday night, the Lions’ football team hosted ESD for its season finale and Senior Night. After honoring a tremendous senior class, the Lions took the field hopeful for a season-ending victory. The Lions found themselves trailing 0-21 in the final minutes of the first half, but the offense drove the length of the field in a two-minute drill to set up a trick-play touchdown pass from Mateu Parker to QB Lawrence Gardner to close the half. The Lions fought back in the second half, scoring 21 consecutive points and achieving a 28-21 lead with three minutes left. The Eagles’ strong passing attack took them down the field for a late touchdown to make the game 28-27. The Eagles attempted to run in a winning two-point conversion but were stuffed by the Lions’ defense at the one-yard line, with hits from Mac Saye, Jack Levy, Jack Baker, and Jax Blalock. After David Dickson recovered the onside attempt, the game was over. In the evening, Lawrence Gardner went 14-for-20 for 284 yards and two passing touchdowns while recording receiving and rushing touchdowns. Mateu Parker hauled in 7 catches for 189 yards and the winning score, and senior Noah Williams not only had a great game on defense but caught a 37-yard touchdown pass. Defensively, the Lions were buoyed by double-digit tackles from William Everitt, Jax Blalock, Noah Williams, Ford Robinson, and Jack Levy. At the same time, defensive linemen Jack Baker and Henry Estes contributed two sacks and two pass breakups, respectively. The Lions finished the season with a 6-4 record.

VOLLEYBALL
The varsity volleyball team played two matches last week.  Having already clinched the #1 seed in the North Zone for the SPC Tournament, the Lions traveled to Greenhill for their last NZ matchup on Tuesday.  The Lions won 3-0, although the score doesn’t show how close the match was as games 2 and 3 were nailbiters, with the Lions eventually winning each by a score of 28-26 and 30-28, respectively.  The following night was the Lions’ Senior Night at home against Dallas One VB Club.  The team got creative with their lineups in this match, featuring all seniors in the first 2 games and a “futures” lineup in game 3.  While the Lions lost the match, playing with their classmates was fun.  This week, St. Mark’s hosts the bulk of the Boys SPC Volleyball Championship Tournament.  Play begins on Thursday, with the #1-seeded Lions earning a bye on the first day of play.  On Friday, St. Mark’s will kick off their tournament against the winner of Kinkaid and Ft. Worth Country Day at 2:30 p.m. in Spencer Gym.  A win in this match would move the Lions into the semifinals on Friday evening at 7 p.m.  You can follow the SPC Tournament results HERE.

FENCING
The varsity fencing team scrimmaged against Hockaday last week.  The team’s seniors will compete on Wednesday night, Nov. 6 at 5 p.m. in the combined Senior Night for both Hockaday and St. Mark’s.

CROSS COUNTRY
The cross country team competes in the SPC Championships on Saturday, Nov. 9, at Norbuck Park near White Rock Lake.  The boys race at 9:00 a.m., and the girls race at 9:30 a.m.  Shortly after the conclusion of the event, you should be able to see the cross country results HERE.
