LACROSSE
St. Mark's varsity lacrosse had a full week of practice before heading to Houston to take on Houston Christian and Kinkaid. On Friday evening, the Lions outmatched the Houston Christian squad and won 17-1. Credit goes to Thomas Clancy and the defense for holding the opponent to one goal. The next day, the Marksmen battled a tough Kinkaid squad and won 8-6. In the fourth quarter, the senior leaders stepped up to help the Lions secure the victory. This week, the Lions will face St. Alban’s from Washington D.C. (7 p.m.), followed by Senior Night on Friday against Episcopal Houston (6 p.m.), and finish the busy week with a match against St. John's on Saturday at noon.
BASEBALL
The varsity baseball team started conference play with a home game against Oakridge on Tuesday. Despite overcoming a dropped ball in the outfield, sophomore pitcher Deven Pietrzak minimized the damage, surrendering only two runs to the Owls’ potent offense. However, Oakridge capitalized on 13 walks by the Lions’ pitching staff and multiple St. Mark’s miscues in the infield over the next four innings. Led by sophomore William Everitt and juniors Grayson Redmond, Alex Barrett and Aaron Augustine, the Lions orchestrated a three-run rally before the run-rule ended the game at 16-3 for the Owls. Due to rainy conditions, the Friday home game against ESD was postponed and rescheduled for Wednesday, April 12. The Lions will play a home game against Cistercian on Tuesday (5 p.m.) and an away game against HSAA (7 p.m.)
TENNIS
Last week, the varsity tennis team played their home opener against ESD and won easily, 5-0. The Lions had great support from the fans as the starting lineup, including one senior, two juniors and four freshmen, quickly took care of business. Senior captain Shreyan Daulat had a great showing at #2 singles, as did the Brothers Lahoti (Arnav & Aryaman) at #1 doubles. The team will compete again this week against Cistercian at home on Tuesday (5 p.m.)
TRACK & FIELD
This past weekend, the Lions competed in the Parish Invitational in Addison. Under beautiful weather conditions, the Lions had an excellent effort throughout the day. St. Mark’s enjoyed 29 personal records and 11 season bests throughout the day. Noah Roby won the 800m with a personal record, Asa McCaleb won the 1600m with a season best, Mateu Parker placed first in the Long Jump with a personal record and second in the 300H with a personal record and Julian Carlson placed second in the Shot Put with a personal record. The Junior Varsity Team also set numerous personal records and had many wins, led by Bobby Strauss with a double victory in the Shot Put and Discus, both with new personal records. This week, the Lions will travel to Loos Stadium in Addison to participate in the WT White "Longhorn" Invitational (events start at 8:30 am).
GOLF
On March 20, ten St. Mark’s varsity golfers traveled to Fort Worth for the Jim Osbourne Invitational Tournament hosted by All Saints at Hawks’ Creek Golf Club. The round was played under less than ideal conditions as temperatures dropped and wind increased. Despite being short-handed, the Lions squad demonstrated grit, with junior Hudson Brown having a career day, shooting a personal best of 76. Sophomore Mateo Ubinas and junior Henry Hoak also had career days. Sophomore Luke Lemons had a notable stretch of holes, recording two birdies and sinking an eagle from 80 yards off the green. St. Mark’s two 5-man groups finished 4th and 12th out of 19 participating schools.
