Spring Season Begins

Crew
It was a great weekend for the varsity crew team as they traveled down to Austin for the opening regatta of the 2020 season, the Heart of Texas Regatta, on Ladybird Lake. In the two-day regatta, 24 Marksmen were entered in 19 events. With very little practice on the water due to bad weather since the opening of the season on February 3, the team did well in qualifying boats to advance to finals. Out of 10 events, Marksmen qualified for finals in nine, advancing 13 boats out of 19 entries to finals. The Lions won a silver medal and four bronze medals over the weekend.
  • Silver Medal: Varsity 2V 4x - Drake Elliot ’22, Evan McGowan ’22, Alexander Emery ’21, Paul Valois ’22
  • Bronze Medal: Varsity 1V 4x - Christian Duessel ’20, Jack Trahan ’20, Blake Hudspeth ’21, Billy Lockhart ’20
  • Bronze Medal: Varsity 1V 2x - Christian Duessel ’20, Billy Lockhart ’20
  • Bronze Medal: Varsity 1V 1x - Blake Hudspeth ’21
  • Bronze Medal: Varsity 1V 2- - Christian Duessel ’20, Billy Lockhart ’20
The team is eager to get back to practice to prepare for the next regatta, Texas Rowing Championships April 18-19 in Austin.

Tennis
The varsity tennis team had their first friendly encounter against ESD the day after tryouts ended on Tuesday, February 25. The Lions showed up with a strong line up consisting of solid returning players and a couple of great new additions to the team. The competitive spirit was high as ESD had proven to be a very challenging opponent in previous seasons. On line 1 singles, junior Mark Motlow took on senior Callaway Clark who was certain to be a tough adversary. Clark took on the lead early in the match and took away Motlow’s strength, defeating him 6-1, 6-1. At line 2 singles, freshman Landon Ardila, playing his very first match for the Lions, proved too strong for his opponent. Despite his opponent putting on a great fight and battling through many long points, the younger Ardila brother maintained control of the match the entire period, winning 6-1, 6-1. At line 3 singles, freshman Patrick Flanagan, also playing his first varsity match, took advantage of opportunities to establish a gap between him and his opponent and even though he went through a couple of tough moments in both sets, he quickly got himself out of trouble and onto winning each set 6-2. At line 1 doubles, a strong duo consisting of senior Sid Vattamreddy and sophomore Jeremy Yu proved too tough for the experienced ESD team. Despite not feeling his best that day, Yu and his partner took care of business efficiently winning 6-1, 6-1. At line 2 doubles, despite their first appearance together on the doubles court, junior Max Wu and sophomore Ekansh Tambe proved to make a great team. They battled to catch up after a slow start in the first set, but managed to still take the set 7-5 and eventually got the momentum going and swiftly won the second set 6-0. Overall, it was a great day for the Lions, establishing their first win of the season against ESD with a score of 4-1. The Lions take on Trinity Valley this Wednesday, March 4, in Ft Worth at 4:45 p.m., weather permitting.

Golf
Last week, the varsity golf team competed in the Dallas invitational Tournament hosted by Jesuit at Brookhaven country club. Wind was a factor throughout the day for the ten Lions who played in the varsity division on the Masters course and the five JV guys playing the Champs. Returning varsity senior captains, Romil Mathur and Camp Collins, we’re eager to resume their championship ways, having just completed title runs for their soccer and basketball teams, respectively. Mathur finished with an 81. Junior Rex Corey posted one of his best scores as a varsity golfer, shooting an 83. Three freshmen splashed onto the scene for the navy & gold: James Thomson (88), Logan Johnson (81), and Tommy Zheng (80) all had very impressive debuts to help land both Lions squads in the top 5 in a strong 21-team field. SM’s third-place group of Johnson, Mathur, sophomore Mac McKenzie (who posted an 85), sophomore Anashay Monga (91), and senior Camp Collins finished with a team score of 338. The 5th place team of Zheng, Corey, Thomson, junior Will Rocchio (89), and senior Tony D’Apice finished with a 340. On the JV side, sophomore George Warren led the way with an 89, while sophomore Jodie Thompson (91), junior Gabe Bines (92), freshman Matthew Fan (93), and junior John Hubbard rounded out a team score of 340, which placed 7th out of 17 teams. The team will next compete in the Lost Pines Invitational tournament, hosted by St. John’s at Wolfdancer Golf Club in Bastrop, Texas, this coming Sunday and Monday.

Baseball
On Monday, the varsity baseball team opened its season with a game at Dallas Christian. The contest was competitive early, but walks and errors by the Lions defense opened up the Chargers scoring in the 5thinning. Junior Jacob Bell smashed a ball off the top of the left-field wall for a double, and junior Daniel Sanchez’s sacrifice fly ball scored junior Marlon Henderson for the only Lions score. The game ended after six innings due to (lack of) light, with DC up 9-1. On Friday, the Lions traveled over to Shelton for a game originally scheduled at St. Mark’s. The Shelton coaches were gracious in allowing us to be the home team on their brand new turf field, and the Lions were bolstered by solid pitching performances by junior Jacob Daniels and sophomore Cole Norman. Senior Mason Rareshide got St. Mark’s on the board, hitting a triple and then scoring on a passed ball in the bottom of the first. With the score knotted at 1-1, Norman’s two-out double plated junior James Petrikas and junior Alex Zuch, who scored all the way from first base. Staked with a 3-run lead in the sixth inning, junior Klyde Warren stifled the Shelton offense, recording his first save of the season in a 5-2 victory. A day later, the Lions once again were on the road, this time at Parish Episcopal. Junior Daniel Sanchez gave up a solo shot in the bottom of the first, but he settled down and was stellar through four strong innings of work. Sophomore Camden Reeves came on in relief and threw the ball well despite scattering a couple of runs. Senior Mason Rareshide continued his hot-hitting, rallying the Lions offense in the top of the sixth inning after our team fell behind, 1-7. Junior Marlon Henderson notched a two-out, two-strike triple that inning, plating two Lions runners. Unfortunately, the Lions fell after a valiant effort, 6-9. Next week, St. Mark’s will play in the Hillcrest Tournament. All games will take place at Kimball HS, with the Lions playing at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday and 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

Track & Field
The varsity track & field team made their season debut this past weekend with the team competing in the Greenhill Relays and a small distance group running in the Lovejoy Invitational. It was the small group that made the biggest noise on Saturday. Pablo Arroyo led a small group of Marksmen in the 3200m race at Lovejoy. Pablo finished 2nd in a time of 9:25.67, which put him #4 on the ALL-TIME list! He was followed by his brother Andres in 9:55.31, Sahil Doddain 9:59.30, Julian Ivarra in 10:03.95, and Trey Stager in 10:42.15. At the Greenhill Relays, Kit Colson led the team with impressive wins in the 100m (10.81w), 200m (21.75w) *PR, and anchored the winning 4x100 Relay and 4x400 Relay. Also enjoying a good day was Colin Bajec with 2 PR’s in the 110h (15.52w) and 300h (42.87). Sam Eluemunoh had a very good day in both the Discus and Shot Put with a PR in the latter. This week, the Lions travel to the Arlington Bowie VOLUNTEER RELAYS on Friday & Saturday.

Lacrosse
The varsity lacrosse team opened their season on Tuesday when they traveled to play Southlake Carroll in a rematch of last year’s District Playoff game. The Dragons, having already played eight games this season, had the early edge, leading 4-1 at the half. The Lions won the 3rd quarter 1-0 and trailed 2-4 with one quarter left to play. The Dragons wound up winning 8-4. Charlie Rose, Jake Park (1st of career), Ryan McCord, and Ian Mize contributed the goals for St. Mark’s. On Friday, the Lions hosted Propser HS, who was the THSLL D2 champs just last year. The Lions jumped out to an early lead thanks in part to Alex Geng’s dominance of the faceoff X (winning 81% of faceoffs). Titus McGowan led all scorers with four goals, Ian Mize had two goals and an assist, Ryan McCord had a goal, and an assist, freshmen Henry Boykin and Jack Gordy scored their first goals at the varsity level, and defenseman Carr Urschel scored the first goal of his career. The Lion defensive trio of Carr Urschel, Colin Williamson, and Paxton Scott had a great game keeping several very good scorers at bay. Final score: SM 13 – Prosper 2. This week, the team hosts Plano West on Tuesday and then travels to Houston on Friday to take on St. John’s and then EHS on Saturday.

Water Polo
The varsity water polo team was off this weekend as several team members traveled to California to participate in the Olympic Development Program. This Thursday after school, the Lions travel to College Station to compete in the Aggieland Invitational on Friday and Saturday, which will feature many of the perennial top teams in the state.
