Lion Sports Update 12/11

Swimming
The varsity swim team hosted the St. Mark’s Invitational last Thursday. This is a unique event that only has races of 50 and 100 yards from the 4 strokes. The Lion swimmers swam well and are excited to compete in the first regular meet of the year on Tuesday vs. Cistercian.

Soccer
The varsity soccer team hosted Casady for a non-counter match on a Saturday morning that provided near-perfect playing conditions. The early minutes of the match were filled with end-to-end play with each team’s defense stiffening near their own penalty area. Midway through the first half, the Lions were fortunate not to concede when the Cyclones missed an open net. Luck ran out on St. Mark’s when Casady took the lead in the 28th minute. St. Mark’s responded emphatically when senior William Holtby was unleashed behind the Cyclone back line with a well-weighted through ball from junior Henry McElhaney in the 38th minute. Holtby struck again six minutes after halftime only to see Casady equalize within three minutes. Both teams upped their tempo as the pressure began to mount on both defenses. It appeared that the match would be a draw; however, ninety seconds from the whistle, Casady produced a bit of magic on a play that several Lions were convinced should have been offsides. The Lions have little time to contemplate the loss as they travel to play ESD on Tuesday and then face Greenhill at Hockaday simultaneously with the Hockaday vs. Greenhill girls game at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.

Wrestling

The varsity wrestling team’s third weekend of competition was at the Frisco Liberty Throwdown Duals with two Freshmen (H. Metcalf- 126lbs and S. Neuhoff- 160/170lbs), two sophomores (Enoch Ellis- 152, Elijah Ellis- 195/220lbs), and five juniors (R. Fundis-120, C. Ribman-145, D. Woodward-170, J. Fair-160, and M. Mendoza- 220). The Lions won 19 out of 39 matches against four Texas State Public Schools, to include Chisolm Trail High School (wrestled two times), McKinney Boyd High School, Frisco Liberty High School, and Frisco Wakeland High School. The team had 18 victories, which 13 came by pin. Junior co-captain Cooper Ribman was undefeated for the day and had three victories by pin, a technical fall (referee stoppage due to 15 points) and one forfeit. Junior co-captain Jackson Fair had two victories by way of pin. Junior Mike Mendoza had a pin against his Frisco Wakeland opponent, and sophomore Elijah Ellis had three pins. The two freshmen, Hayward Metcalf and Stice Neuhoff, had one pin each in their varsity debut. Going into the tournament, St. Mark’s was handicapped five weight classes due to Scholastic Aptitude Testing and Debate; this provided our opponents 30 points at the start of competition.

All are welcomed to come out and support at no charge. This Saturday, Dec. 14, the Lions will compete at the Bishop Lynch Tri-State Tournament, which includes teams from Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Wrestling will begin at 9:00 a.m. and continue until approximately 3:00 p.m.

Basketball
Last week, the varsity basketball team participated in a pair of contests against larger public schools in the area. On Wednesday, the Lions defeated Sunset High School. It was a special evening for the community, as the newly-renovated Spencer Gym was unveiled for competition for the first time. The five seniors on the squad who have been such tremendous leaders across the community started together and played extremely well. Taylor Hopkin led all scorers with 17 points and did not miss a shot from the field to ensure the Lions got off to a fast start. Andrew Laczkowski logged the first made three and first dunk on the new court, and every player scored at least a pair of baskets in route to a balanced 97-point scoring effort. On Friday, the Marksmen traveled to Highland Park where the atmosphere was electric. Laczkowski once again broke things open with a thunderous dunk, thanks to a phenomenal full-court pass from fellow captain Harrison Ingram. Ingram led all scorers as part of his triple-double and had a full arsenal of prolific play-making on display all night long. Both teams shot the ball well, but it was the Lions who forged a sizable first-half lead and ultimately came away with a 70-52 victory. This Wednesday evening, the Lions host the Anglican Church Grammar School from Brisbane, Australia, for a freshman, JV, and varsity team tripleheader beginning at 4:30 p.m. On Friday, the Lions travel to Desoto where they will be tested by a very talented team that beat the Lions two out of three times last year.
