Lion Sports Update (04/02)

Tennis
Last week, the varsity tennis team traveled to ESD on Tuesday and secured a 5-0 win. On Thursday, the Lions followed up with a trip to Oakridge where the team also won 5-0 and had some great exhibition matches win as well — seniors Sebastian Kiehn and Ryland Ellis were the match to watch. The Lions are now 2-0 in SPC North Zone play.  This week , the Lions tennis team takes on Cistercian on Tuesday and look forward to competing hard in another SPC counter.

Baseball
On Tuesday, the varsity baseball team entered SPC North Zone play with a road match at ESD. The Lions looked sharp early, posting a three-run lead after two innings following Jack Frary's RBI ground out, John Stephen Hohmann's RBI single and Aaron Augustine's run scored. Starting pitcher Deven Pietrzak worked quickly those innings, commanding the strike zone and shutting the Eagles' bats down. However, five fielding errors in innings 3-6 undid the Lions as ESD capitalized on the mistakes, scoring seven unanswered runs in a 7-3 win. Hoping to atone for the loss, St. Mark's finished the week with a Thursday showdown at Oakridge. Once again, the Lions bats were hot early as they scored two runs after Jackson Ostella and Aaron Augustine bunted safely to move runners into scoring position. Grayson Redmond's sacrifice fly to centerfield and John Stephen Hohmann's groundout plated the St. Mark's runners. With bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the first, Ostella made a diving catch at third base and then fired out the Owl's baserunner at home plate. This outstanding play helped settle starting pitcher Jackson Williams down, who threw five strong innings. Lucas Petrikas followed suit, keeping the score knotted at two each in the 6th. However, in the bottom of the 7th, a lead-off triple by the Owl's centerfielder turned into the game winning run two batters later as he scored on a chopped single to CF. The Lions (0-2 in SPC, 4-6 on the season) will be on the road Tuesday with a counter game at Cistercian before hosting the HSAA Angels on Thursday.

Lacrosse
The varsity lacrosse team took on rival ESD on Thursday, March 28th.  After an evenly matched 1st quarter in which the game was tied 1-1, the Lions struggled in the 2nd and went into halftime down 8-1.  The final result was a 13-3 loss for the Lions.  Next up is a battle with district foe Rockwall on Tuesday night at 7 pm, and then SPC games this Friday against Houston Christian at 6 p.m. (Senior Night) and then Saturday against Kinkaid at 12 p.m.

Golf
On Monday, March 25th, the St. Mark’s golf team competed in the Hockaday Invitational Tournament at Brookhaven.  The course was sopping wet from a rainy stretch, but the sun showed up just in time to make for a beautiful 18 holes.  The unique format featured 2-player scrambles in which teammates paired up and submitted joint scores as sixsomes.  Despite conditions rendering birdies a little tougher to come by than most scrambles, the duos of Hudson Brown and Harry Wang (both seniors), Henry Hoak and Charlie Hill (also both seniors), Sam Merryman and Luke Rogers (both freshmen) and Jonathan Lobel and Beau Babilla (both sophomores) all finished under par for the day.  The Brown/Wang and Merryman/Rogers combos placed first and second, respectively, among all tournament pairs.  Moreover, those four, along with the Hoak/Hill duo combined to score first in the team standings.  What a great showing for the Lions!  Next week, the team will try to bring home some more hardware from Prestonwood Christian’s tournament held at Fire Wheel Golf Course on April 9th.

Track & Field
A small group of Marksmen track & field athletes participated in the Texas Relays in Austin on the campus of University of Texas.  Participating in one of the largest meets in the nation, the Marksmen ran against some of the best teams from around Texas and surrounding states.  Mateu Parker ran a personal record in the 110 hurdle prelims with a time of 15.79, but did not advance to the finals.  The 4 x 100 relay team ran 43.34, finishing 18th out of 60 teams in the prelims, but did not advance to the finals.  The 4 x 400 relay team ran 3:33.19, 28th out of 55 teams, in the prelims but did not advance to the finals.  This coming Saturday, the Lions host the 24th annual Bradley V Urschel (BVU) Invitational.  The meet will take place at Hockaday School while the SM campus is under construction.  Field events begin at 9 a.m., early running events at 11 a.m. and running finals at 2 p.m.
