Lion Sports Update (01/11)

Wrestling

This past Saturday, the varsity Lion Wrestlers competed at the Frisco Heritage High School Duals. The teams competing were Highland Park, Richardson-Lake Highlands, St. Mark’s School of Texas and the three Frisco schools: Reedy HS, Heritage HS and Colony HS. This was a great chance for St. Mark’s to compete against strong local public schools. At the end of the day, the Lions won two out of five matches, closing the gaps against Heritage HS, Highland Park and Lake Highlands from last year’s duals:

Heritage HS (44) vs St. Mark’s School (33)
Reedy HS (30) vs St. Mark’s School (42)
Colony HS (24) vs St. Mark’s School (54)
Highland Park HS (62) vs St. Mark’s School (18)
Lake Highland HS (39) vs St. Mark’s School (33)

This Friday, the St. Mark’s Lions will wrestle at Bishop Lynch High School and compete against BL and St. John’s of Houston. Wrestling will start at 5 p.m.

Soccer
The varsity soccer team returned from the break in better form than they demonstrated during the alumni match. Against HSAA, the Lions were strong in possession, but could not capitalize on the numerous opportunities they created. While HSAA lacked opportunity, they were keen in efficiently scoring against the run of play, and strong in defense with their goalkeeper making five superior saves to thwart the Lions in Coach Martin’s 650th match as the varsity coach. The results did not dampen the evening’s festivities as it was senior night, providing an opportunity to honor the contributions of Ben Adams, Temi Balogun, Zachary Bashour, Max Levy, Tyler Tang, Sharang Vyas, Daniel Weinstein and captains John Ma, Alex Soliz and Reed Sussman. All ten seniors, their parents and their little buddies, were the center of a splendid celebration that included nine of the seniors starting the match (Vyas was injured and could not play) and each given a well-deserved curtain call when substituted just prior to full time. The Lions begin north zone play this week, hosting Fort Worth Country Day (Tuesday) and traveling to Trinity Valley (Friday) while also hosting Covenant in a friendly on Thursday.

Basketball
This past week, the varsity basketball team won three contests in as many days. On Thursday, the Lions hosted the Home School Athletic Association. Junior Henry Estes made his first start of the season an impactful one, notching several rebounds and points to spur a blistering 23-2 start for the Navy and Gold. That momentum sustained for the next 48 hours, as the Lions enjoyed similar early success against a pair of UIL 4A opponents. First, against Anna (team ranked in the top 10 in recent state polls), St. Mark’s used a noisy Spencer Gym crowd and the hot shooting of senior Bryan Graham to command the action and ultimately forge a 30-point win. The next morning, the team traveled to Connally High School near Waco, where freshman Dawson Battie notched 22 points and senior CJ Ness totaled a near double-double to bolster another sizable Marksman victory. This week, the Lions host Fort Worth Country Day for the first SPC contest of the season Tuesday. On Thursday and Friday, the team travels to Parish and then Trinity Valley in the hopes of earning another 3-0 week.

Swimming
The varsity swim team did not compete last week, but will gear up for a meet against Greenhill on Tuesday.

Alumni Athlete News
Harrison Ingram ’21 and the North Carolina Tar Heels Men’s Basketball team went 2-0 with wins over Pittsburgh and #16 ranked Clemson last week. Harrison averaged 8 points, 9.5 rebounds, 3 assists in those 2 wins.  The Tar Heels faced NC State on Wednesday on ESPN.
