Lion Sports Update (04/09)

TRACK & FIELD
The varsity track & field team enjoyed a highly successful Bradley V. Urschel (BVU) Invitational this past weekend.  Returning to the glory day of past BVU’s, year 24 and counting, and after a pause in hosting this prestigious event for a few years, the Lions achieved 51 personal records (PR’s) on the day!  The outstanding performance of the day went to Ethan Singleton who ran 49.23 400m for the #2 time in school history.  That capped off a busy day for Ethan as he anchored the 4x100 Relay, finished 4th in the 200m and ran a leg on the winning 4x400 Relay team.  His supporting cast wasn’t too shabby either, as indicated by the number of PR’s throughout the day.  Mateu Parker had another ironman day running a leg on the 4x100 relay, finishing 2nd in the 110h and 300h (huge PR of 40.89), anchoring the winning 4x400 relay team, and finishing 4th in the long jump with another PR.   Parker Steinbrueck and Clark Cooper made their debut in the steeplechase with a 1st and 3rd finish.  Ace Wilburn pole vaulted to a huge PR of 10’ 6” to qualify for the SPC championships in 4 weeks.  Riggs Bean had big day with PR’s in the 100m (11.20), 200m (22.96), triple jump (37’ 6.5”) and a leg on the 4x100 Relay. A great day for the Lions!

TENNIS
The varsity tennis team traveled to Cistercian last Tuesday for their third SPC counter match. It was the most challenging so far, but the boys came up with a 3-2 victory to keep the Lions’ winning streak alive. In particular, great doubles play from seniors Amogh Naganand and Arnav Lahoti and sophomores Kian Foshee and Tejas Allada helped St. Mark’s to the win.

BASEBALL
The Lions’ varsity baseball team traveled to Cistercian on Tuesday for an important SPC counter match. In the bottom of the first, starting pitcher Deven Pietrzak recorded an "immaculate inning" as he struck out the side on nine pitches. Energized by this extremely rare feat, the Lions scored two runs the next inning after William Everitt and Jake DeBoever were brought home after Jackson Ostella and Aaron Augustine both grounded out on the infield. However, the scrappy Hawks took the lead in the bottom of the 4th after capitalizing on an untimely error in the infield and a couple key hits. Unfortunately, St. Mark's was unable to get anything going offensively after that despite Pietrzak's excellent complete game performance, eventually falling to Cistercian, 2-3. On Thursday, the Lions hosted HSAA. Starting pitcher Lucas Petrikas went 2 2/3 of an inning, surrendering five runs (two unearned) to the Angels' offense. Jackson Ostella followed up with 3 1/3 of solid work, keeping St. Mark's in the game. Grayson Redmond's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 5th scored Aaron Augustine, who co-led the Lions in hits (2) along with John Stephen Hohmann. In the bottom of the 7th, William Everitt smashed a ball to right center, scoring Redmond and Jake DeBoever, closing the gap to 6-3 before the final out was recorded. St. Mark's now stands at 0-3 in the conference and 4-8 overall as they have a busy week ahead with three games on the docket: Monday vs. Fort Worth Country Day (4:30 p.m.) and Friday vs. Cistercian (5 p.m.).

LACROSSE
Varsity lacrosse had a busy week with three games that resulted in a 2-1 record.  On Tuesday evening, the Lions battled district opponent Rockwall and emerged with a 6-5 win, scoring the game winning goal with 5 seconds remaining in the 4th quarter.  Then Friday evening, the Lions hosted Houston Christian and cruised to a 14-5 victory in which all rostered players saw game action.  The next day St. Mark’s took on Kinkaid and lost 5-3.  This week the team takes on defending state champion Highland Park on Tuesday evening at 7:45 p.m. at Highlander Stadium.

GOLF
The golf team was off last week and will compete next at the St. John’s Tournament at Lost Pines Country Club in Bastrop on April 14-15.
