Lions Prepare for Winter SPC

Wrestling
The wrestling team went to Houston last weekend to compete in the Texas Prep State Championships. At the meet, four Lions finished in the top 4 and earned their way to the Prep National meet in Lehigh, Pennsylvania, on February 26 and 27. Will Wood ’18 took 2nd at 106 lbs, Ivan Day ’17 took 3rd at 120 lbs, Tucker Ribman ’18 took 2nd at 126 lbs, and Bryce Blinn ’17 took 4th at 160 lbs. The team will wrestle in the SPC Championship meet this Saturday at St. John’s School in Houston.

Basketball
The varsity basketball team completed North Zone play with two convincing wins against local rivals. On Tuesday, the Lions travelled to Cistercian, where early foul trouble led to a slow start and a 3-point halftime deficit. However, momentum soon turned, as St. Mark’s used six 3-point makes and ferocious defense to dominate the third quarter, 22-5, en route to a nineteen point victory. On Friday, ESD brought its camo-clad crowd into a raucous Hicks Gym atmosphere. The Lion faithful packed the stands and pulled off the eerie “silent night” – an event in which the students remained quiet until the squad scored its 10th point before going ballistic in support of their team. The roar was deafening and the energy spurred St. Mark’s to a twenty point win. The Lions finished the regular season with an 8-1 conference record and secured a first-round bye at the SPC tournament this weekend by earning the #2 seed.

Soccer
The varsity soccer team endured its toughest week of the counter season with a 1-2 loss at Cistercian where the Lions would eventually succumb to the Hawks despite senior Charlie O’Brien’s strike from distance that gave St. Mark’s the lead in the 1st half. In the next game, the Lions then found themselves trailing ESD by two goals on Senior Night. Inspired by a vocal crowd, St. Mark’s regrouped and halved the deficit with a quarter hour remaining when Grant Brooks ’17 lofted his header into the upper right-hand corner of the goal. They goal was set up from the opportunistic play of Will Diamond ’16 and Graham Gillespie ’16. With only ninety seconds remaining in the match, Alex Sanchez ’16 sped across the penalty area and emphatically redirected sophomore Arjun Singh’s service into the back of the net for the equalizer. The draw earned the Lions one point and saw them finish in fifth place on seventeen points, a mere three points behind North Zone Champion Greenhill. The Lions begin their quest for an SPC championship on Thursday night against South Zone rival, John Cooper, at Episcopal High School in Houston.

Swim
The Varsity Swim team hosted Ft. Worth Country Day and Trinity Valley on Senior night last Thursday. The Lions were swift in the water, winning the meet 136 to 21 (FWCD and TVS scores were combined). The team travels down to Conroe, TX to compete in the SPC Championships this Saturday. The Lions have won the last 7 SPC titles in swimming.
